“Masked Hunter” Assassin Bug Nymph (Reduvius sp., Reduviidae)

The nymphal stages of members of this assassin bug genus (referred to generally as “Masked Hunters”) exude a sticky substance that covers their entire body, including the antennae and legs, to which their environment (dirt, frass, plant fragments, etc) adheres to, effectively rendering them invisible. This affords them protection against predation, and allows them to function as ambush predators themselves.

In the top image, the nymph was a resident of a termite and borer infested tree stump, so carries a livery of sawdust and wood fragments. The bottom image shows another individual with a soil- and leaf litter-based coating. With the final moult into adulthood and the addition of wings for mobility, the assassin loses its cryptic capabilities and assumes a more conventional appearance.

I was on the subway today, and when the train got delayed, this little kid was like, “fuck,” and a literal chorus of grown-ups went: “HEY.”

let him say fuck

I was at a crossing once and a kid’s dad said ‘and we have to wait for the green man’ and the 30 people on this crossing all stood waiting for the green man just to prove to this kid that that’s what you do. I’ve never seen anyone wait for the green man on this crossing before you just go when its clear. But Everyone Waited.

Reversely, when I once crossed the road when the light was still red, a group of little kids booed at me.

Just for once I’d like to tell the gate agents and flight attendants that my folding wheelchair is going into the onboard closet and not have them tell me there’s “no room”. Bitch that’s a wheelchair closet, not a “your bags” closet. Move your damn bags where they belong.

Ok, so according to my friendly aviation expert, this is a Big Fucking Deal. In fact, if an airline argues with you about putting your wheelchair in the wheelchair closet or even suggests there may not be room, unless there is already another passenger’s wheelchair in that closet, they have violated federal law.

CFR Title 14, Chapter II, Subchapter D, Part 382, Subpart E, Section 382.67, Subsection (e)

“As a carrier, you must never request or suggest that a passenger not stow his or her wheelchair in the cabin to accommodate other passengers (e.g., informing a passenger that stowing his or her wheelchair in the cabin will require other passengers to be removed from the flight), or for any other non-safety related reason (e.g., that it is easier for the carrier if the wheelchair is stowed in the cargo compartment).”

This is hugely important because it means that if this happens to you, you should report their asses to the DOT. Why? Because these statistics are published every year for every airline, and the airline gets a huge ass fine for every violation. If we want to see change, we need to make airlines literally pay every time they treat us this way.

So I’m watching some stuff go across my dash, and you know what?

I don’t base my assessments of people on what weird fetishes they have. Nor do I particularly care what inanimate objects they want to draw as sexy animate beings, as long as said beings are portrayed as adults.

If someone isn’t sexualizing rape, pedophilia, actual beastiality (furries don’t count, there’s a difference between sexy anthro dog art and actual dog), incest, or abuse, I don’t care what they think is hot.

I care if they’re a gross person who goes around intentionally getting into arguments and trying to “trigger” people, but I don’t care about their fetishes. Nor do I think “ha, you have a weird fetish” is anywhere near a good counter-argument.

Just let people like weird-but-harmless things.

Just hung up a bird house about a week ago. Had it for years now, with house finches and chickadees faithfully nesting in it each year.
Well, new house and recently found it so decided to hang it up just to let the local birds get use to it.
Didn’t take this one long to claim it.
Still has the previous oqnwra nest in it and everything.
