Axolotls should not be housed with fish, especially tropical fish! Their temperature needs are vastly different. The fish could also decide that axolotl gills are a delicious treat and eat them.

My axolotls are full grown and their gills are much too large for the guppies to eat. The guppies also completely avoid the axolotls because they are food. That’s the whole reason I have them. I buy nice feeder guppies when there are good colours available rather than just plain ones. Yes I know guppies need quite a higher temperature but they are food. So I don’t care about them. They can’t hurt my axolotls and my lotls are happy which is all that matters.

Sorry I don’t feel like literally giving my axolotls the fish. I let them catch them. Who knew guppies could live and breed in cold waters.

P.s if you’ve ever seen guppies they spend their time closer to the top of the tank/the middle where the lotls are usually at the bottom of the tank so they never interact.

This is why I’m always telling you people to ask before you attack. You don’t know the situation.

The reason your guppies are at the top of the tank is likely because they are stressed. They are generally very curious and explore all areas of the tank when they’re comfortable. Not to mention, feeder guppies are usually riddled with disease and parasites.

I did not attack you. i simply gave information. in no way was i rude or nasty. I just thought you may have gotten misinformation from a pet store as it unfortunately happens often. I was only trying to help.

Unfortunately though, i do have to agree with @water-spots with the possibility of disease with feeder guppies. Please at the very least keep an eye out for disease.

To answer all three of you: I can tell the signs of illness in guppies so I only bought them when they looked good (I haven’t bought fish in almost a year, they just keep breeding) and I ALWAYS quarantined them. My dad is the chemical guy, I’m still learning but he added all the stuff to make sure they were good to go (he takes care of the tank chemicals). So I’m pretty sure they’re all healthy now (since it’s been so long) I obviously watch the guppies to make sure they aren’t getting sick.

And I feed my axolotls every other days. Sometimes 3 days depending on how much they ate. So I know they’re getting (probably more than) enough food. I’m always checking forms to try to learn more about them.

I know it is cruel to the guppies but my axolotls used to eat all 12 in a couple days. All of a sudden they stopped and the guppies just kept breeding so there are a lot now. I feel it would be quite cruel to grab them with tongs and hand feed the live fish to my axolotls so I just leave them.

I’m sorry I felt attacked, I realize now you were all just trying to be helpful. I just wish people would ask before they even said anything because ALL of you are saying there’s a problem here, acting like I have no idea what I got myself into, but I’ve wanted axolotls for years and to this day I still research them because I worry so much there’s something I don’t know yet.

I’m not saying I’m 100% knowledgeable on axolotls but I can say mine are in good hands.

You can’t visually acern if a fish has parasites, esp not in stressful situations such as a pet store or an unheated tank with predators. The cruelty does not come from feeding guppies to a predator fish but from housing them in completely unfit and inhumane conditions indefinitely until they happen to be eaten. If you really wanted to do this you could set up a heated guppy tank free from predators and transfer them over when the Lotls need to be fed. It is continual cruelty to animals to house them in the same tank willingly, especially when you could be feeding the Axololtls earthworms cruelty free with healthier Lotls as a result. This is not the only option available to you it is the one you chose to pursue.

They have been there for over a year. They are fine. You can tell when guppies are sick though and if they have parasites they show signs of sickness. I know exactly why you think it’s cruel and let me say it again I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE GUPPIES. They were meant to be food. And my axolotls DO eat earthworms but don’t you think it’s also cruel to cut up a living worm? They are feeder guppies. No one cares about their normally short lived lives. Get over it. Yes I choose to pursue it so my axolotls can have a choice between different fish, shrimp AND worms. How unhealthy they must be, obviously with their well balanced diet. Theres a big difference between feeding a creature in the way that minimizes suffering of the prey and what you are doing, which is just cruelty. You’re keeping living sentient creatures in stressful situations because you like the idea of your Axolotl eating them. And you really can’t tell. Some parasites cause noticible differences but not all. You are telling yourself you can because it makes you feel better about keeping them in the same tank, same as you told yourself that the gills are safe despite that not being true either. You are not listening to the facts about the situation you created simply because you created it. The fact of the matter is you are forcing one group of living beings to live in cruel conditions in order to keep another group of living creatures in unhealthy conditions. You can call the guppies food but they still have emotions and theys still are living things. If you had a type of fish that ate axolotls would you force them into water hot enough to cause them intense stress to live indefinitely just because they are now food? Would you not be upset if you saw someone being cruel to axolotl for no reason simply because they decided that axolotl have no value? There are simple facts that cannot be disputed her. 1 you are treating the guppies in an extremly inhumane way 2 you are not providing proper diet or environment to the axolotl.

Your header says you love all animals but you do not. You admitted you do not care about fish welfare. Nobody is saying “don’t feed your animals live things”. 

They’re saying “it is cruel to leave animals in enclosures with their predators when they aren’t going to be eaten any time soon”. What you’re doing is equivalent to keeping multiple birds in a cage with a cat. The guppies are animals capable of experiencing fear and pain, and as such deserve as much respect as your axolotls. 

Also, live food can be used if an animal won’t take anything else, but humanely killed food is always preferable. Being swallowed alive by a predator is not a good death, and “but it’s natural!” is not an excuse.

Lastly, fish will breed under highly stressful circumstances, it’s not an indicator of wellfare.

  • Natasha Romanoff loves matchmaking but she’s not that smooth or completely sauve with her own love life when it really matters.

  • Bucky Barnes is a fantastic friend, but also an absolute SHITHEAD and will MERCILESSLY prank u or embarrass u in front of ur date or write on ur face while ur sleeping. the worst part is, unless u know him or ur Steve, u would never expect it.
  • Pepper Potts is the most capable, trustworthy woman in the world but when she’s drunk off her ass, she giggles a lot, embarrasses her friends (read: Tony) with hilarious stories about them, and voluntarily breaks into song if whatever ur saying is also a famous lyric.
  • Sam Wilson is fair, understanding, and supportive but if u eat his leftovers and leave the foil or takeaway box in the fridge afterward, all bets are off and u need to flee the country immediately.
  • For three weeks someone keeps anonymously sending emails and texts and tacking notes in places they’ll see with really dumb bird puns to both Sam and Clint. Immediately everyone assumes it was Tony. Who else could it possibly be?
  • It was not Tony. It was Steve.
  • Rhodey is always called when Tony has a Stupid And Potentially Dangerous Idea because everyone assumes he’ll talk him out of it. This is a mistake. Most of the time, he does, but sometimes you’ll catch Rhodey saying “it’s gonna WHAT? Hold on, I’ll be over in five do not start without me”
  • Steve once walked out of his room at 3am and when he was halfway to the living room and heard an intense screamo/electric pop music mashup playing, a thunderous crash that lasted for fifteen seconds, Clint groaning, Tony shrieking, and Thor laughing a touch too maniacally, he turned right back around in what he later describes as a tactical retreat.
  • Rhodey and Tony have a secret handshake they made up at MIT. when people find out, they assume they’ll be embarrassed or deny it. Not only are they wrong, they will be subjected to a demonstration of it and if they’re REALLY lucky, they’ll get to see the full version. I’m not saying it includes light shows and projectiles, but that is exactly what I’m saying.
  • Everyone helps out with team dinners at least once, but Bruce is always a constant. be careful not to piss him off though. he’ll get u back in such a way that if u confront him about it he’ll turn it on u until u start to believe u imagined the copious amounts of crushed ghost pepper in ur chicken.
  • The Avengers can sit through Titanic, The Notebook, and Up without crying, but they don’t stand a chance against Marley & Me. Thor and Clint will be openly sobbing, Steve will be curled in on himself with his face in his hands, Bruce will need to leave the room, Tony will have tears streaming down his face as he babbles about why no one should ever get a dog ever forever and why they’re getting one first thing in the morning, and Natasha will be clearing her throat and wiping at her eyes as subtly as possible.

oh my god.

let me share a memory with y’all. it’s from i guess 1978 or thereabouts. it’s high summer. i don’t remember where my mom was driving me, in our avocado green chevette, i just know there was a traffic jam that turned 35w northbound into a parking lot from horizon to horizon.

picture it – wait, you don’t have to use your imagination, this happened all the damn time back then.

every one of those damn cars was burning leaded gasoline. there were no emissions regulations. there were no safety regulations. there were just thousands and thousands of detroit steel shoeboxes belching visible smoke as they idled, engines loud and hot, here and there a radiator giving up in the heat, a cloud of burning oil rising.

i, a smeet of five or six, was choking on toxic smog.

i reckon it was about a half hour into the traffic jam that i first threw up. i remember a blinding headache, i remember being confused, i remember dry heaving with my arms and head hanging out the window, the green metal of the car burning my hands and my chin. i don’t remember passing out, but i’m told i lost consciousness before mom was able to get to an off-ramp, because there were no emergency lanes on the highways back then.

i lived. and life went on. what were we going to do, complain? if i’d died, the cause of death probably would’ve been recorded as heatstroke, not carbon monoxide poisoning.

i know i’m probably preaching to the choir here on tumblr. but i really wish i could tell that story to the people who think deregulation is no big deal. i wish they’d put themselves in my mom’s shoes.

or even just look at some old pictures, then look out the window.

ever notice how cityscapes used to have that orange tint and hazy aura? yeah, that’s poison gas.

remember how the mississippi river used to be a stinking soup of baby-shit yellow sludge covered with disturbingly stiff rafts of light orange foam?

i can’t even find pictures of the sludge and foam, i guess they didn’t end up on the internet. the smell was indescribable. that oily shimmer. the reek of dead things. people didn’t boat on the river for pleasure; it smelled too bad, it was too ugly, and you could get super super sick if you touched the water.

and now look at it.

i still wouldn’t want to drink it, but if i fell in i wouldn’t bolt for the shower in a panic, you know?

if the thieving billionaires get their way, we can kiss those sailboats goodbye, and learn the smell of toxic foam once more. the ultra-rich won’t even feel the extra money, they’ve already got more than they could ever touch, they just stash it in offshore accounts to rot, but the rest of us will return to a time of neverending nausea and weird cancers. a time when every elementary school class had at least one kind who’d been born with no fingers or their heart outside their body, and this was just… the way things were.

i’m sorry. i didn’t mean to longpost. it’s just. god. y’all have no idea how CLEAN everything is now, compared to when i was a kid. and these rich old men are counting on that, on people not knowing or not remembering how bad it was before regulation, not realizing how much we need these protections until it’s too late.

Hi! I have a betta and I want to start getting some live plants for his tank, and I was wondering if there are some “starter” plants that are better than others for him, and what type of ground would be best for live plants. Thanks! :)

The over all consensus seems to be that anubias plants and swords are the easiest beginner plants. They can get fairly large, but tolerate trimming as well as a wide range of different lighting and water conditions. They’re also quite nice looking plants. 

There’s a list of aquarium plants and their basic care requirements here to give you a better place to start your research 🙂

Get yourself some Java moss and Java fern, they’re nearly impossible to kill. Neither should be planted in the substrate, just tie/wedge them loosely against wood or rocks and they’ll grip on.

My therapist told me something meaningful yesterday, she said “It’s important to remember that when you’re depressed you have to nurse yourself and be extra gentile towards yourself. Just like an athlete wouldn’t break an ankle then force themselves to run that ankle. They rest as it heals and do not think “I am a failed athelete” they think, “right now something isn’t working so i’ll take care of myself until it does.“ 

Just like a broken bone, depression can change the way your daily life plays out, and pushing yourself too hard and getting frustrated when you don’t feel better is just like trying to run on that broken ankle and getting frustrated when it doesn’t heal.

Read this. Then read it again. And then save it and read it over and over when you are depressed.
