you ever just sit and realise u can’t remember 80% of your childhood? like … what happened? who am i ..?

Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories – their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

Hmm…..That’s why the smell of a new box of colored pencils allows me to recall perfectly whole days of being in kindergarten as if they had happened yesterday.

I’ve been wondering why I have so much trouble remembering anything before the age of 10

Picked up a used coffee cup to throw in the trash. Heard something slide in it and nearly shat myself. I’m so sorry little miss, but I have to throw away your little house.

A very cute little yearling Prairie Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis). Probably last summer’s litter. This is a great example of being cautious in places where rattlesnakes occur when picking up trash or moving debris around, because those are often hiding places!

Tips for petting cats

Don’t startle the kitty. Make sure they can see your hand, or announce your presence and settle your hand gently on them. If you don’t know the kitty, offer your hand for sniffing.

Cats don’t always like long strokes down their back. It can wind them up and give them nervous energy. Instead, try scritching motions, like the hand motion used to scratch an itch. Slow scritches all down the spine, lingering on the scruff and tail base, are generally good.

Most cats like it if you scritch their back just in front of where the tail connects.

Spots that cats can’t reach on their own are good. Scruff, back of the neck, and back of the head are good for most cats. Don’t grab the scruff, but scritch. Between shoulder blades is also good.

Cats either love being scritched under their chin or hate it. Try it, then go from there.

Behind the ears is usually good. Gentle scratching motions with one or two fingers.

A cat showing their belly is generally either expressing trust or offering to wrestle. Most cats don’t like belly rubs. Occasionally you get a weird one, though.

If you’re unsure, make scritching motions on top of the kitty’s head and let the kitty turn their head until they’re pressing your hand against a spot they want scritched.

If the cat bites or slaps, you either hit a spot that hurts, hit a spot they really don’t like having touched (belly and feet are common bad spots), or you’re doing something that gives the cat a lot of nervous energy.

If the cat bites, don’t yank away. One of our cats is kind of a high-strung kitty, and if you put your hand somewhere she doesn’t like, she bites. It’s not hard, though, you only end up with scratches if you yank away. Left to her own devices, she bites, holds for a moment, and then lets go with no damage. Make a high-pitched, unhappy noise, remove your hand when the cat lets go, and try to figure out what happened. Cats don’t bite or hit without good reason.

If a cat is pulling away from you, stop petting!

To lift a cat, put your hands under the ribcage/belly and lift. As soon as possible, cradle the cat in your arms so the hindlegs and chest/belly are supported. One arm slung under the hind end for support and forelegs hooked over the other arm generally works. If the cat starts struggling, when at all possible, put them down.

To put a cat down, you just kinda point them towards the ground slightly, open your arms, and they sort things out. They don’t like being gently set right on the ground like you do with dogs.

if your toilet bowl is filling up with water and is about to overflow (or is already):

  1. take the lid off the tank
  2. hold up the floating device. it’s usually a rubber ball on the end of a stick.

if you’re not sure which part to lift, gently lift up various things until you find the one that stops the water.

you will not need get your hand wet bc the part you’re looking for is usually at the highest point!!

the toilet bowl should immediately stop filling!

PS: toilet tank water is the same water that comes from your sink faucets so please don’t panic if it gets on you

Chicken bedding and nesting materials, also organic methods for lice and mite control 🙂

**My suggestions and favourites**

* pine shavings- absorbent, low dust, nice scent.

*hemp-reduces ammonia, foot pad dermatitis and reduces other diseases.

* alfalfa- great scent, high quality, hen and chicks can eat it. Great for digestion.

*lemon grass- repels flies, mosquitoes, and other flying insects.. also smells great.

**I sprinkle a bit of AG lime in the bottom of the nest boxes after I clean them. This works for me to help keep Odor down also it’s meant to prevent lice and mites**

** I don’t use hay or straw anymore because it can get mouldy and mites hide in the straw**

***Herbs I use for natural lice and mite control.. ***

* lavender- relaxing, calming, great for lice and mite control. Natural Insect repellent.

*eucalyptus leaves- natural insect repellent

*peppermint- Insect repellent and anti parasitic

*marigold petals- Insect repellent, also great for pain relief and insect bites. Great for yeast infections and also egg colour and health.

*spearmint- great for sinus, relaxes and calms the chicken when laying or brooding.

*catnip- insecticide also great for worms in chickens. Contains many vitamins for chickens health.

* basil- repels insects, great anti bacterial and great for the eggs.

Please note: if your chickens actively have mites or lice, you need to get them a commercial treatment. Parasites can seriously harm or kill your birds. Remember that “natural” lives include dying of parasitic infections sometimes.

These are good preventative measures, don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with using them. However, if a parasitic infestation gets established despite the herbs, you need to use something stronger before it kills your fluffbabies.

Pro tip: if an evangelical stranger approaches you asking to pray for you, there’s inevitably something about you that they see and want to change. [Ex: I attend a very conservative, very religious uni and am clearly tomboyish/lesbiany, and thus am constantly attracting evangelical strangers] If you can’t shake them (usually very difficult), then turn the tactic upon them by asking if they mind you leading the prayer bc “I have a few things on my mind.”

Then talk about whatever it is that’s making them uncomfortable. I ask god to protect all the lgbt+ kids that are lost, isolated or homeless. I mention my non-Christian brothers, sisters, and siblings that have to fight for recognition and respect in a monoreligious nation. I pray for the protection of immigrants and refugees, reminding my evangelical friends that their savoir was once one of that number. You can pray for pregnant mothers to find the resources and abortive care that they need, if they need it, if you’re feeling particularly brave.

This achieves two things: 1) there is no response to this, esp if you wrap it up with “amen, thank you guys so much for doing that with me. I hope y’all have a blessed day” and leave them no room to continue the prayer. But more importantly 2) that group will NEVER bother you again and you will show them, using their own method against them, that their prayer isn’t an act of faith, but of power.

Just thought I’d share bc I know that I used to be accosted by evangelical strangers once a week on my uni campus and never had a good response or ‘out’. This is by far the most effective method of shutting that sort of behavior down real quick.

Jesus could be a passive-aggressive son of a G and this is right out of his playbook.

wow, what a gorgeous month to remember autism isn’t a disease and there’s no “cure for autism” and there shouldn’t have to be one just because allistic people can’t get the hell over themselves and realise other people experience the world differently and have different needs and require different accommodations. terrific.

autism is literally a neurological and development condition but ok sure yeah keep with the feel good platitudes, you absolute tit

There’s a strong difference between a “disease” and a “condition”, you absolute tit

Think of it this way. 83% of computers (laptop and desktop) use Windows. 13% use Mac. The vast majority of software is developed for windows, with another significant fraction developed for or adapted to mac, because that’s what most people use and it’s all most people understand.

Now imaging you’re one of the 1.4% of computers are running Linux. This doesn’t mean you’ve got a windows machine with a virus, it doesn’t mean your computer is broken, it doesn’t mean it needs to get replaced with a more common operating system. It’s not quite as good at some things most people take for granted, but it’s significantly better at a bunch of other things. But if you have a problem with your computer, the vast majority of people won’t have any idea what you’re talking about. They’ll give advice for how to deal with a similar issue on their own computer, and it will be worthless. The only people with any idea what you’re going through are going to be on linux forums. And you can mostly muddle through all the things everybody else can do with improvisation and lots of WINE, but it sure would be nice if the devs of that video game you were looking forward to would like, acknowledge the existence of your demographic.

Now imagine that on top of all that, the primary linux support system had been taken over by a bunch of assholes who’ve never so much as looked at a command prompt in their lives. but who have declared themselves the Voice of Linux Users and keep spending millions of dollars on campaigns “educating” everybody about how using linux makes you a fundamentally bad and stupid person so your laptop needs to be burned immediately to force you to get a correct computer.

i love that analogy so fucking much
