@why-animals-do-the-thing
Sorry to bother you, but I’m seeing a lot of people call this “cute”. To me this cat’s body language looks like it’s trying to decide if it wants to hunt the bird. The bird also seems very nervous to me. Am I right to be worried?

There’s not enough video here to make a determination about the bird’s behavior or body language, but yes, you’re absolutely right to be worried.

This is an interaction that should never be allowed to happen by responsible pet owners. Cat saliva is full of gram negative bacteria that kills small animals very quickly if introduced to their bloodstream, and even if the bird doesn’t get hurt, this has to be intensely stressful for it.

With so little footage, I would guess (after consulting with a wildlife professional who works with birds) that what you’re seeing on the part of the bird is an avoidance behavior – basically, staying still in hope the predator goes away. This is absolutely investigative behavior on the cat’s park. However, if the cat’s pawing triggered an escape reflex in the bird, the bird taking off would likely trigger a predatory reflex in the cat, and then the bird is probably going to be dead.

The slightest scratch from a tooth or recently-groomed claw could spell slow, painful death for that bird, in addition to the risk of the cat attacking it. You do NOT put birds (excluding adult chickens, ducks, etc), rodents, reptiles, or other prey animals near cats. No matter how friendly and calm the cat seems. Even if the cat treats the prey animal like its own kitten.

TO MOVE TO ARGENTINA SAY A MEMBER OF ZONA LA PLATA SENT YOU THIS INFO TO BECOME A REFUGEE

Heey, this is sweet, but you don’t need to become a refugee to live legally in Argentina if you’re Brazilian! It’s the easiest country to move to for Brazilians and the whole process to obtain a DNI (the Argentinian national identity) takes 90 days and you get a 2 year visa, which you can later turn into a permanent residency visa without much trouble. It’s very affordable, we don’t even need to translate the documents thanks to a bilateral agreement and you don’t have to prove you have a job lined up for you or anything. Unless Brazil leaves the Mercosur, there’s no need to go so far as to ask for refuge if you choose Argentina as your destination.

thank you so much for your addition! reblog this please

if you plan to do this, id suggest you do it as quickly as possible, because its been said bolsonaro wants to leave mercosur

Halloween is tomorrow so here’s a friendly reminder that kids are going to dress up like kids. You’re going to see children in costumes from Steven Universe, Fortnite, Minecraft, maybe undertale. Please, for the love of fuck, be cool. These are children dressing up as characters from video games/ children’s TV shows and your opinions about those shows are irrelevant right now. Don’t be a dick, let children have fun. If a 12 yr old in a Fortnite costume knocks on my door for candy, I’m damn well going to give it to them, and I really hope you all will too.

Mmm that cronch :v

Also what kind of insect is this?

He’s a Eurycantha calcarata, a large species of phasmid (stick/leaf insect relative).

A lot of herbivorous insects only eat a few types of plants, but these guys will eat literally anything that might count as a leaf. Grass, cacti and succulents, ferns, moss, even rhododendrons and other toxic plants that are left virtually untouched by insects outside aren’t safe. In the wild they’re pests of oil palm plantations, being among the only insects able to chew through the palms’ thick, leathery leaves.

And apparently they eat paper too. He can probably get some nutrition out of it as well, because he can digest some cellulose. Unlike weak- ass mammalian herbivores and their gut bacteria, phasmids produce their own cellulose- wrecking enzymes to handle their fiberey diet.

Other fun facts about this species:

– The males have giant spikes on their legs that can pierce human flesh down to the bone (but mine never seem to use them as long as they’re handled gently)

– Unlike other phasmids, which tend towards the epitome of passiveness towards their fellow insects, males of this species are jealous bastards that will murder each other with their leg spikes if kept together in the presence of a female

– There’s anecdotal evidence that mating pairs sometimes form long- term bonds (sleeping in the same toilet paper tube every day, coming out to feed at the same time night, etc.) and when one partner kicks the bucket, the other one often dies soon afterwards even if they were different ages.

– Their eggs are the size of small beans, and look exactly like beans. Seriously, you could throw them into a bag of mixed dried beans and you’d never know which beans were the eggs unless you knew exactly what shape and color of bean to look for.

Anyway I hope you had fun learning about this one particular type of bigass paper- munching bug. They’re one of my favorites and I enjoy them immensely.

Reptile Survey!

I’m conducting a survey to learn more about how you got your information on reptile care, and what substrates you choose for your pets!

This is for a college project of mine to make information about reptile care more accessible and understandable, starting with the dangers of calcium carbonate products. Please answer honestly!

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HYD2JZW

Visit this link to take the 3-5 minute survey! Thank you so much for your help.

Not an enclosure… But it’s for a good cause, so please take a moment 🙂
