(actual answer: birds have two gaits depending on if they spend more time walking in trees or walking on the ground. Hopping means they mostly move around in trees, walking with one foot in front of the other means they move on the ground. Small birds stay in the trees to avoid predators, and therefore have a hopping gait because they need to hop between twigs instead of walking on a surface.)
