“The water dragon keeps our river safe. Their legacy is sweet clear
water and lush crops and Tar seeping from the blood of those that seek
them out. You can even see their work on their flesh. The poisons
they’ve absorbed for centuries shift across their skin in bursts of
color as they walk the festival, gently inspecting things with golden
whiskers. The elders say to make our offerings pretty and our
conversation pleasant as we give thanks.
But we must never touch them.
And we especially must never search out the source of the lovely, lonely, singing we hear during the summer rains.”
Ad Camp on patreon asked for something that was fun to look at, but not to touch. so have a dragon.
New species of bat found, Niumbaha superba, and it’s adorable.
Oh wow! I’m glad people are as excited about animals as I am. Here’s some additional photos. Fun fact: this bat is so different from others that a new genus was created!
This burgundy beauty is an African giant toad [also known as the Congo toad, Amietophrynus superciliaris], a true toad found throughout western and central Africa. Due to its enormous range many have suggested that African giant toads are actually a species complex composed of three or more extremely similar, but slightly different, species. Despite the fact that the toad has a status of “least concern” on the IUCN Red List, their sale in international trade was made illegal in 1975, out of fear that their unique looks would cause them to be over-harvested for the pet trade.
