The recent storm has everyone running… er… slithering… for higher ground.
My dad calls me from outside saying to grab my hook, there’s a snake. My mom laughs as I toss my snake hook and tongs at my dad to grab a hold of the snake, shrugging it off as I casually mention “oh it’s just a little kingsnake”
Absolutely flawless smol friend.
omg you are so good I love this thank you for sharing helpful snek frien and helping helpful snek frien
Habitat:
Most common in lowland forests & moist areas, in Cambodia, Indonesia (Java, Sumatra, Bali, Salawese),
Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, & Vietnam.
Activity and Behavior: Nocturnal & usually very timid (especially in daytime). Active at dusk & after dark. Usually inoffensive; will
not usually bite unless stepped on. Often found near inhabited places & on trails at night. Mainly prey on
other snakes, their eggs, & available other small animals. Oviparous, no clutch size reported (other
observed related spp. usually lay 3-12 eggs/ clutch).
Venom Characteristics: Potent neurotoxin. Most victims bitten while asleep in huts at night. Local symptoms generally minimal.
Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort, headache, & giddiness. Neurotoxic symptoms include
ptosis, facial paralysis, & inability to open mouth, or extrude tongue. Human fatalities have been reported
but are rare.
“Giddiness” as a symptom amuses me because I have this mental image of some guy being like “dude!! you won’t -haha- believe this, it’s awesome, a snake BIT me, come look, it’s the BEST THING also maybe get a doctor”.
This colorful beauty is a subspecies of ringneck snake endemic to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They are among the larger of the ringneck snake subspecies, growing from 20 to 87 cm long. The regal ringneck snake is found in the mountains, not in the desert. The regal ringneck snake, unlike other subspecies, is almost exclusively ophiophagous, having a diet that consists primarily of other snakes. They have enlarged rear teeth and a weak venom that serves to immobilize their small prey, but is harmless to humans. Ringneck snakes are nocturnal, secretive snakes which spend most of their time hiding under rocks or other ground debris. If threatened, the ringneck snake typically hides its head and twists its tail in a corkscrew type motion, exposing its brightly colored underside, and expels a foul smelling musk from its cloaca.
For anyone intending to be in Brazil, please keep in mind that the “red on black, you’re OK Jack” rhyme doesn’t work for coral vs king snakes there. See above.
If you aren’t sure, don’t touch it!
If you’re sure it’s venomous, just leave it alone. Coral snakes are small, shy, and can’t bite through thick clothing.
