The first one was popular so I made a follow up

Basically, the point of this is that fish produce ammonia in their waste. Ammonia is highly toxic, burns their gills, and will kill them. There are bacteria that convert ammonia into less toxic nitrites, and then there are bacteria that convert those nitrites into even less toxic nitrates, which plants can use. This is how you get them useful bacteria so your fish don’t die slow, painful deaths.

Also, don’t ever wash your gravel or filter in tap water. Those are what all your good bacteria live in. They don’t live in water, that’s a myth.

You can potentially bypass the wait by adding filter media or gravel from an established tank. You still have to do all these steps, but you might not have to wait for the bacteria to show up and grow.

Self defence sprays that are legal to carry and use in the United Kingdom

Image 1: Farbgel
Image 2: StoppaRed

I’ve seen a lot of people (mostly women, for reasons which may be obvious) speaking about being worried when going out, be it alone or even with friends, both in the day and at night. I know that a lot of female friends of mine carry around a can of antiperspirant or a pot of pepper to use if they’re ever attacked. What I know a lot of people don’t realise is that there are products out there which work in a violent situation and help in catching the assailant for the best part of a week afterwards.

Known as ‘criminal identifiers’, these sprays are brightly coloured dyes which can be sprayed in the face of an attacker. Unlike things such as CS or Pepper sprays, criminal identifier sprays are legal in the UK.

There’s a few available on the market, with farbgel and Mace’s Stoppared being the mostly highly recommended.

What these sprays do is release a sticky, brightly coloured dye. It’s difficult to wipe away and stains the skin a bright red colour. No matter how hard an attacker might try to remove it from their skin and clothing, the staining typically lasts for around a week and doesn’t even start to fade until after a few days have passed.

Unlike CS and Pepper sprays (which, again, aren’t legal in the UK) criminal identifier sprays don’t cause irritation or pain to an attacker. Instead, they expand and clog up the area sprayed with a kind of sticky foam that’s difficult to wipe away. It should give you enough time to escape and report someone whose face resembles a baboon’s arse to the police.

Each can of the sprays costs around £10 each, though it may be cheaper when buying multiple canisters and if you shop around.

A Glasgow nightclub has installed a two-way mirror which allows male revellers in private booths to spy on unsuspecting women as they visit the toilet! With no notification or signage anywhere in the venue many female club goers have been left feeling embarrassed and used. Although they do briefly show the mirrors in a promo video, the club has been quickly deleting comments and posts on their social media from club goers trying to alert others to the situation. This is pretty much illegal and hugley violates privacy. Thank you The Shimmy Club for giving us a shiny, new, creative and cool take on objectification.

i’m never leaving my house again, this world is just too fucked up.

WHAT!?

gross gross gross gross gross

Good morning disgusting.

Remember ladies:

  • “No space, leave the place” (fingernail test)
  • A two way mirror must be set INTO the wall, not placed on top of it.
  • If you rap/knock against the mirror, one installed onto a wall (a normal mirror) will make a dull sound, because there’s something behind it. A two-way will have more reverberation.
  • Use the flashlight on your phone to shine on the mirror, if it’s a two-way, you’ll be able to see into the other room.
  • You can also shield your eyes and see in if you lean up against the glass.
  • The room being viewed will have to be brightly lit (10x brighter than the room looking in), so if you’re in a typical dimly lit club bathroom, you’re ok.

boosting the fuck out of this

They have this in Continental Midtown in Philly, it’s fucking creepy and not cool at all

the most obvious solution i can think of is to break that motherfucker. what are they going to do? sue you for breaking something they shouldnt have had?

That’s fucking disgusting.

Hey, fellas. You ever feel like you have to check if you’re standing in front of a two-way mirror? Women do.

Thousands of Bats Slaughtered Annually in Asia End up on eBay and Etsy

If you buy those cool little mummified bats and believe that they are simply found dead or by-kill, you should know that:

  • Between mid-2000 and 2013, the US imported at least 9,000 bats per year
  • Conservationists focusing on bats in Indonesia call it a “virtual certainty” that these bats are not being sustainably harvested, natural deaths, or bykill
  • With the taxidermy renaissance / vulture culture, I imagine that the number of bats imported has only increased
  • One conservationist said 9k per year was “probably only the tip of the iceberg” because they can’t check every package that enters the US

Yes, the majority of these bats are legal, and ethical sourcing can exist – but all evidence points to Indonesian bats being intentionally hunted for meat and mummies.

^Signal boost!!

And remember that white nose fungus is already threatening/decimating many bat species; they really need all the help they can get! Although we don’t see them doing it most of the time bats provide us a lot of ecological services like pest control and pollination.

The reason you need to buy eyeglasses from online retailers like Zenni Optical

80% of the eyeglasses in the world are made by Luxotica, that’s right, no matter the brand name, the source is the same, but not only do Luxottica make the frames, they make the lenses, they own the stores, they even own the largest eye insurance company, Eye Med – which is why they can charge you 400$ for a pair of glasses that costs maybe $20

75% of people who purchase eyeglasses need them out of medical necessity (as I do) so I went and tried the online shop Zenni Optical, and was able to buy no line bifocals with UV coating for less than $70, when LensCrafters wanted to sell me a pair for $550 – and that’s WITH insurance!

Nicest thing about Zenni? You can upload a photo of yourself to try on glasses, and if you don’t like them – YOU CAN RETURN THEM for credit! This is because you don’t need to gouge your customer to make money, glasses really cost only pennies to make. Now I can buy a couple of pairs, and have choices in what I wear, rather than investing hundreds of dollars – sometimes for quality that sucks.

Regardless of whom you buy from, don’t feed Luxottica any more.

Does this apply to countries outside of the US? And if so does anyone have any links to international glasses stores?

Probably also applies to countries outside of US, Luxottica is Italian, and French lensmaker Essilor has agreed to buy Luxottica in a bid to create a new global giant in the sector. The combined group will have a market capitalization of around 46.2 billion euros ($49 billion), based on both companies’ closing share prices on Friday.

just google online eyeglasses and you’ll find plenty of links.

Zenni is international! I’ve been buying my glasses there now for years and I’ve never had any issues. Not with fit, not with lenses, not with breaks – nothing.

I have a strong, difficult prescription and was regularly paying upwards of $700AUD every two years for a single pair of glasses. I bought my current pair of glasses a couple years ago from Zenni and guess how much I spent?

…$7. In total. Frames and lenses. And they are singularly the best glasses I’ve ever had. I wear my glasses every waking hour of my life and these babies have not just survived but they look almost as good as when I first received them.

And because they are so cheap I also have a pair of sunglasses, and TWO pairs of alternative glasses I can wear when the mood strikes me. Since then my mom AND my dad, my uncle, and my cousin have all started to buy from Zenni.

BUY YOUR GLASSES FROM ZENNI! I cannot stress this enough. If you’re paying retail then you’re being ripped off.

I’ve reblogged this before and Ima reblog it again…

Zenni ain’t the only place out there. In fact I shopped there first then found other’s I liked better. I primarily buy off Eyebuydirect but I have also shopped at coastal and Zenni. Eyebuydirect has been overall my favorite. There prices are in the same price bracket as Zenni which is like $12-$80 for frames and where as zenni you can get lenses for free Eyebuydirect the lenses I think are like $14-18

but the quality of the glasses I have gotten from Eyebuydirect felt far superior to those I got from zenni, Eyebuydirect also has great customer service. Basically please look around the internet. Like just cause glasses are fucking awesome and deserve to be a fashion statement as well as a need.

I am currently wearing a pair of glasses from eyebuydirect that I paid a little over $100 I  got frames that where $35 and I got those fancy blue coated lenses that help protect your eyes against looking at screens for extended time (I get way less headaches with them!) those lenses where a bit pricier.

but. in comparison, last I checked in at walmart (fucking walmart.) my lenses alone base cost would of been $140 that’s just the stupid glass discs not even the frames.

For later reading – eveyone in the house needs new glasses and spares.

maybe i didn’t read the post clearly enough, but how do they test you for your prescription if its all online??

You do need to get a prescription from an optometrist, that you can’t avoid, however you don’t have to buy the eyeglasses from your optometrist, some don’t like that because that’s where they make their money – others are paid salary by their stores so they don’t care. Part of the prescription is the pupillary distance, and you’ve paid for that, so they have to give it to you. If they still don’t, Zenni has a ruler you can print out, so you can figure it out yourself.

Also, if you eyeglasses are not correct (I have no line bifocals and those can be an issue, though I’ve never had them with Zenni) you just send them back no charge to get re-made, or send them back for a refund. You don’t lose anything for trying except time.

I have posted about Zenni and about online eyeglasses before (and I’m thrilled to hear about another company).

Do not buy your eyeglasses from a retailer who is going to charge you a hundred dollars when you can get them online for under 25.

I have gotten glasses from Zenni since 2013, and at this point I’ve probably saved thousands of dollars with how terrible my eyes are and how expensive my lenses turn out in stores.

I got my updated prescription from lens crafters, and ended up getting a nice pair of glasses too cause my ex was paying, but I flat out said I’d be getting any sunglasses (the doc earnestly urged me to, as my eyes have gotten way damaged by cheap ones) from Zenni.

Didn’t even bat an eyelash, doc was getting paid for my visit, he was just like, “Don’t tell the sales guy, but I think that’s much smarter for sunglasses”.

Just make sure you ask for/they write down your pupilary distance on your prescription, they don’t always and most any online glasses site will need it.

I personally prefer Zenni because they tend to have more options in terms of frames. Admittedly I wear giant heart shaped sunglasses so my taste might be a little wilder than yours. I get my eyes checked at a discount retailer, upload the info and save myself $300 on glasses because most retailers charge me an obscene amount per lens for them to be thin. I’ve never had a quality problem with Zenni & I have 3 pairs of glasses from them. Admittedly I tend towards the plastic frames because I know I break my glasses by falling asleep in them.

I’ve used eyebuydirect many times and I’ve never had a problem, and I’ve saved soooooo much money!

FYI folk, PETA has a new ad out that’s a graphic (thankfully photoshopped) photo of a naked model being skinned alive. I’m not going to link to it because I do not support anything the organization does nor their shock-and-awe advertising campaigns, but just wanted to give people a heads up because I’ve got a pretty iron stomach and it squicked me out.

Once my friend Henry was accused of wearing wireless headphones by a substitute so she said for him to hand them over so he took them off and handed them to her. Then later on she asked him a question and he didn’t respond so she said it louder and he still didn’t respond. She asked why he was not responding and he said “I can’t understand you ma’am, you took my hearing aids.”

HOLY SHIT

one time we had a sub that was handing back papers and called my name. I asked if someone could grab it for me and she started mocking me for not even standing up. taunting me asking why I was not walking up to the front to get the paper myself.

my classmates went dead silent and after the sub’s laughter ended someone informed her that the wheelchair parked nearby belonged to me

My sister once had her insulin pump ripped off of her because her exam proctor (a sub) thought it was some cheating device.
He soon figured out that it was, in fact, not, when the port on her side (the place the needle goes in) started bleeding through her shirt. Her pump started beeping frantically, because that’s what it does, and it was general chaos until my sister ripped what’s basically her pancreas out of his hands, told her friend “Let the next proctor know I’ll need extra time,” and walked out of the room towards the nurse.

Literally schools are shit with disabilities. In elementary school I was having a high blood sugar reaction(cold sweats to rapid passing in and out of consciousness, vomiting and finally leading to a massive seizure before you die) and I KNEW I had to go to the nurse cuz I was getting worse. Kept telling my teach I needed to go and he kept saying no till finally I felt myself about to throw up and I’m screaming LET ME GO (i was a little kid to me i couldnt do anything in an institution without an adults say so or id basically go to hell) and the bitch said SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH AND PAY ATTENTION TO THE LESSON where I proceeded to projectile vomit all over my desk and he jut kept going on with the lesson. Finally I just booked it out of the room but I was too far gone to even REMEMBER where the nurses office was let alone where the hell I was that my class literally just left and helped me to the nurses office. I immediately went to the hospital and officially died for 5 minutes before I was revived. I could have stayed dead all because some fuck twad thought his lesson was more important than a students life

After Columbine, a local school installed metal detectors and made everyone walk through them and put their bags on a table for a teacher to search.

A few days into the school year, a teacher ripped a boy’s insulin pump off him because she thought it was a weapon, despite he and his sister insisting it was an insulin pump and he needed it to live.

I don’t know how many of you are still in school but I have some valuable knowledge that might actually help with this problem! In the United States there’s this thing called a 504 Plan that you can get which basically gives you legal protection from disability/chronic illness discrimination in public schools.

Students can qualify for 504 plans if they have physical or mental impairments that affect or limit any of their abilities to:

walk, breathe, eat, or sleep;
communicate, see, hear, or speak;
read, concentrate, think, or learn;
stand, bend, lift, or work

Examples of accommodations in 504 plans include:
preferential seating,
extended time on tests and assignments,
reduced homework or classwork,
verbal, visual, or technology aids,
modified textbooks or audio-video materials,
behavior management support,
adjusted class schedules or grading,
verbal testing,
excused lateness, absence, or missed classwork

I’m a type one diabetic and my school nurse would do stuff like keep all my meds in a locked cabinet, not let me take my insulin or test my blood sugar unless she was watching me, and lie to my mother about me inducing low blood sugars in order to get out of class. She wouldn’t even let me keep glucagon (emergency sugar injection) on my person in case I passed out from low blood sugar.

So one day I casually mentioned all this to my endocrinologist and she was really mad. She was really angry at the school nurse for mistreating me like that and informed me of this thing called a 504 plan. A 504 plan protects students with disabilities and chronic illnesses from discrimination by outlining exactly what a student needs to meet their special needs. For me, this meant I had to be able to keep ahold of my own meds in case of emergency and keep track of my own glucose levels, that I would never be marked late for a class if I was busy treating a low, and I could pause the clock on a standardized test to check my blood sugar and treat it.

If you have a disability and you’re still attending public school, PLEASE read up on 504 plans because they saved me so much grief when I was still in school. It might help you too.

Here’s some more information about 504 plans:

https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/special-services/504-plan/understanding-504-plans

http://m.kidshealth.org/en/parents/504-plans.html?WT.ac=

Passing this along. I would not have made it this far without my disability documentation in school.
