i’m also confused at the idea that pink diamond/rose quartz only started the rebellion so she could play with the humans.

this is my personal theory: yes, her human obsession was of course, part of it. pd was a naive and frankly fucked up individual who didn’t understand that humans are more than toys. but if that was her sole reason for the rebellion…she wouldn’t have started it.

she would have just been satisfied with her zoo. presumably she made it because she childishly thought she was “saving” them, like a kid bringing a bug or small animal into the house and accidentally killing it with improper care.

instead, she wanted to save all of earth, and give it to the crystal gems. she saw the “defective” gems suffering under the diamond authority, and wanted to make earth, her planet, a safe place for them. she felt she could be more like “herself” with them.

(this part of the story was not a lie)

but why not go against her sisters as pd? well, what if in the beginning, she thought she could get more colonies? she’d be a good diamond and build a network of planets, while as rq, she’d secretly turn each of them into another planet for the crystal gems. then, once she had enough colonies of rebels, she’d have enough power to bring the battle to a stalemate, reveal herself, and demand the other diamonds end their oppressive system, peacefully.

but it became clear to her later that couldn’t happen. her feigned inability to crush the rebellion made her appear too weak in the eyes of the other diamonds. they wouldn’t give her another colony. her pink diamond identity was no longer of use to her.

so she was like “fuck it, i can’t change the entire system, i’ll just make earth independent from them and make it a safe place for us gems who don’t fit the mold.”

essentially like a rebellious teenager going “i hate my stupid family, i have no power to change them and they won’t care if i’m gone, so i’ll fake my death and live on my own with my girlfriend, my anarchist friends they disapprove of, and my humans.” she even rolls her eyes like a kid. gawsh, my stupid dictator parents don’t understand that this isn’t a phase.

unfortunately, her naivete caused death and destruction she never could have foreseen. she didn’t realize what an important symbol she was, both as pink diamond and as rose quartz.

but honestly, imagine being born immediately having that kind of power and influence. would you be much better?

that’s the nature of gemkind, and rose clearly envies humanity for not having that kind of burden, for being able to grow up and learn from their mistakes.

in a way, steven was right. rose did make him to fix her mistakes.

because she believed only the empathy of a human, a creature able to grow and change and understand others on a deeper level, could do it. when she met greg, she knew he was the one she’d give up her physical form for. he’d be sure to pass on the compassion and love she could never feel herself onto their son. in that form, she could right her wrongs.

she didn’t understand steven would naturally deify her like everyone else did, and stress about living up to her. because it was obvious to her that no matter what, he’d do a better job than her.

it was never just about the humans. don’t undermine all her intentions.

Whatever she did, however she did it, she tried. Most of the decisions that set this whole thing off were made when she was a teenager, and Pink Diamond never had an opportunity to grow past that. She was Rose Quartz, and nobody treated Rose Quartz like the inexperienced teenager she secretly was.

Her decisions weren’t perfect. Some of them were seriously questionable. Some of them may prove to be even more questionable. But whatever she did, she was trying to do the right thing.

She tried.
