An important distinction

“Search and rescue” means that the thing or person being searched for is to be recovered in the best condition possible.

“Search and retrieval” means that the thing or person being searched for is simply to be retrieved. I tend to interpret this as “retrieve in the most sensible manner possible”. And, sometimes, the most sensible manner possible is in multiple pieces.
