i know people on tumblr say stuff like “this post triggered my fight or flight reflex” a lot, but this post triggered my fight or flight reflex
Um
Creatonotos gangis! They’re actually quite little (about an inch and a half wingspan). This one’s a male. Those scary-looking tentacles are just pheromone-sensing organs that inflate to look for/attract mates. All male moths/butterflies have some kind of structure like this. You normally can’t see them. Some are small and some are big, like this one. Just a moth bein’ lewd.
so you tellin’ me he got his whole dick out in the open?
Found a fat caterpillar outside, and he turned into this big boy. I set him free as soon as he could fly, as these dudes only live long enough to mate. I’d love to see more of them around 🍂 #polyphemus #moth #big fat precious moth (at Castle Rock, Washington)
I did not expect to be able to id this teeny micro moth to species, but I lucked out with the distinct patterning – this is a leaf blotch miner, Neurobathra strigifinitella.
