These absolutely fabulous Crested Toads aka South American Common Toads (Rhinella margaritefera) were photographed in Amazonian Peru.

Some SA Common toads have enormous crests and some do not. This broad ranging species is extremely variable, and may in fact be several species.

The crested owl (Lophostrix cristata) is a species of owl in the family Strigidae. It is the only species (monotypic) in the genus Lophostrix. It is a resident bird and occurs in Central America and northern South America. It is a medium sized owl, easily recognizable with its very long whitish ear tufts and otherwise darker appearance. They inhabit lowland rainforests and prefer old growth in proximity with water. The crested owl is a strictly nocturnal species, but very little is known on its behavior.

I’m guessing the dark face/crest areas serve to hide their eyes and make them less obvious to anything on the lookout for owls. Mostly it’s just made them absolutely gorgeous.

Here’s Juli! Big centipede lady married to Attica

Being a huge centipede, she can traverse the garpede tunnels in Deepnest pretty easily should she choose to – normally this happens when Attica has things that need transporting that are just too big for her tiny spider self to handle on her own, or when Attica wants to take her on an outing to somewhere outside Deepnest. Otherwise she’s content to stay at home and gossip at the Mask Maker (with Attica’s help they keep supplies well-stocked, and Juli takes these opportunities to talk at him. Emphasis on “at”, he’s usually so absorbed in his work that he continues to chatter to himself and take no notice of anyone else.)

Juli’s generally pretty friendly and laid-backl, but can be very protective of her smol wife. Not that Attica can’t take care of herself. When Attica’s gone for stretches of time like she is, Juli loves to dote on her when they get time together. And that includes getting grumpy on her behalf.
