Here’s the promised video of Stumpy walking around!
I had to wait until night time when she was up to get it so not to wake her up to do so. I really wanted to show exactly how she moves about with just the two legs at the left side. From what I can gather, she likely missing all of her right front leg while her right hind leg she might have some of her leg left which is how she’s able to walk still.
I made sure not to let her walk too long, I rather her walking in soft bedding vs a hard surface.
As far as researching purposes, she the second case of a two legged hamster I’ve found online.
For those wondering and didn’t see my first post, Stumpy is a hamster my family adopted from my job. Stumpy was surrendered to us by her previous owner and was discovered she missing all her legs on her right side, due to severe neglect. Her chances of adopt were slim due to how bad her disability is and needing special care and a special set up. This where we came in and have given her a forever home to live out her days and let me say, she’s awesome despite that.
This video also serves as a reminder and to educate people how a lot of the so called ‘ plastic hamster cages/hamster balls” out in the market are ABSOLUTELY DANGEROUS to these guys. Its likely what cause Stumpy to have lost her limbs in the first place, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.
@amazingpetenclosures, thank you guys for your input with this one, I was the anon that asked about help and with the advice from people that was able to work out something for Stumpy.
Meantime promised to tag you guys on this, I’m sure you are very curious on her movements.
I’m really relieved that she went home with you! I think you sent me an ask or left a comment saying you were planning to take her and I don’t think i ever responded. But I’m glad she’s with you; someone so willing to put the extra effort into her care 🙂
And thank you for tagging me in this, I was really curious about it! Looks like she’s a very alert little critter. I bet she’ll cruse around pretty well once she gets settled in. I’d be interested in seeing what kind of set up you came up with for her too, at some point, if you felt like sharing c:
At least she doesn’t seem to be in any distress now. And, honestly, it’s cute to see her scratch with the stump, like she doesn’t even realize she’s missing a foot there.
My suggestion would be a very flat enclosure, maybe with some wide, soft ramps if she can pull herself up them. Maybe test with food lures if she can climb?
Or maybe a tiny, four-wheeled thing could be made of Legos so she can be set on top and can push herself around with her back foot, like those doggy wheelchairs? Not as a permanent measure, just now and then so she can get some outside enrichment.
We maybe have a ghost in our house that has popped up since we’ve had work done on the walls, and random stuff keeps happening but something keeps opening my hamsters cage and leaving it open so I’ve just had to explain to thin air what a hamster is because as my sister pointed out, my house is old af and my ghost probably doesn’t know what a hamster is, I’m also leaving it a note in the hopes it can read.
just to illustrate, I don’t think my ghost means my hamster harm, it’s just confused
