Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo releases 82 critically endangered frogs in Mississippi

typhlonectes:

The release took place on July 28. With possibly less than 75 adults
left in the wild, Dusky gopher frogs are one of the most critically
endangered frog species in the United States.

Dusky gopher frogs, also referred to as
Mississippi gopher frogs, were identified as an endangered species in
2001 and are currently listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red
List of Threatened Species. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has
been working with the frogs through the AZA dusky gopher frog Species
Survival Plan since 2004.

The Zoo has a population of over 120, which is
the largest in the country. This is the forth species of amphibian to
be released to its natural habitat from the Zoo’s Amphibian Conservation
Area since its inception in 2007…

Great work by my friends at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium! They’re the same group supporting my frog rescue project in Honduras– the #HARCC Honduras Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Center

Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo releases 82 critically endangered frogs in Mississippi

All aboard the dad train! This male horned land frog [Sphenophryne cornuta] carries his offspring to safety in the jungles of New Guinea. Unlike most frogs, the offspring of Sphenophryne cornuta grow by direct development, hatching as tiny versions of adult frogs instead of having a tadpole stage. The male of the pair watches the eggs, and when they hatch he gathers them up on his back and takes them to a less exposed location where they can grow in safety. Image by Michael Pennay.

I just want to say that I love frogs

Liberace is becoming more and more vocal. He is very confident in his singing, and can be set off by anything – the creak of the spray bottle sounds enough like a frog croaking that he begins to ribbit each time I moisten their enclosure. The other day, he heard chanting from ‘Teen Wolf’ and began croaking in unison. Each night around 10 PM, he crawls out of the daytime hide and chills under the rock bridge, while Millie sits on top of it. Liberace is a good boy, a sweet boy.

Millie…. Millie is a wicked frog. She cares not that I be too large to consume, for she doth try! The villainy! I tried to place a mealworm in the terrarium and the instant I opened the door, she jumped OUT of it and onto my arm, biting desperately at my wrist. I am a jumpy person and if she weren’t so sticky she would have been flung into the wall. As soon as I placed her gently back into the cage, she projectile peed on me! Right out of the terrarium, hitting me squarely in the chest – a good two foot range.
