unquestionably sea horses are one of the most bizarre looking sea creatures. Pipefish, a close cousin is even weirder. Look at these fishes and you will agree with me.
Along with sea horses and sea dragons, the pipefish belong to the group
Syngnathidae. There are thousands of species living in the oceans.
Like their sea horse brethren, the male pipefishes also do parenting duties like carrying eggs and also “giving birth”.
Most of the pipefish species live in the coral reefs. Some can also be spotted in sea grass beds. Here are some more photos of them.
I hope that you will enjoy this post.
Pipefish, like seahorses, are incredibly difficult to keep in captivity and fragile so it’s best left to highly experienced keepers or professional facilities.
Blenny is a group of fish which lives on the sea floor. There are many types of blennies. Some of these fishes are very colorful and odd looking.
The above fish is a sailfin blenny. Look at the yellow horns. The blenny looks like a close relative of the dragons.
It’s a tessellated blenny.
It’s a Moyer’s scooter blenny – colorful, is not it?
Yellow watchman blenny.
This blue blenny looks like a cartoon character.
Redspot blenny.
The lawnmower blenny.
The curious blenny comes out to watch the diver.
Panamic fanged blenny
Yellow watchman blenny.
Yellow blenny.
Blue streamed blenny.
Look how diverse and colorful they are.share with friends to see this
They are all very good and wonderful friends, but there are a couple imposters in among them! The moyer’s scooter blenny is actually a dragonet (in the Callionymidae family) while the yellow watchman, yellow and blue streamed are all gobies (Gobiidae). I’m pretty certain the rest are in the suborder Blennioidei which actually is like 5 families but they are all just considered blennies because fish phylogeny is a mess.
That last goby is actually a freshwater goby, a species of Sicyopterus! There are a whole bunch of amazingly colourful freshwater gobies and I adore them all.
But I love all the small benthic fish with all my heart and yes we need more of them all the time forever.
The slingjaw wrasse exhibits the highest degree of jaw protrusion ever described (65% of head length) in any fish. Using its jaws, it produces a powerful suction used to feed on fishes and small crustaceans in shallow coral reef habitats.
avianassassin: i decided to take the weirdest lookin fish i could find and make it a zora it’s a barrel eye (looks like shit sorry but i thought you’d get a kick out of it)
A kick? buddy I’m screaming you took a weird af fish and made it gorgeous *o* this is so neat? your art is so neat?? Thanks so much for showing me omg ///
How is this betta not picking a fight with the cory?! :O
Triton is very chill! When it’s the corys’ feeding time, he goes out of his way to make sure he doesn’t nip them by accident. He is a very good boy!
Not all bettas are aggressive enough to care about fish that don’t look like them. Cories are generally safe, plus they have armor plates for insurance against an occasional nip.
