Hey, sorry to bother you, but I was curious about that post you reblogged about cats being outdoors? I live outside the US, in the UK actually, and having cats that can roam freely between inside and outside is normal here. Most stay within the neighbourhood and do not cause harm to people. They also keep the population of rats and mice down which is an issue with terraced/joined houses in the city. Would you say indoor cats are more of an American phenomenon?

(first off, I apologize if this comes off as rude or argumentative. It’s not meant to, but I have a bit of a fever, so my brain is a tad mushy. The intended tone here is just “here is what I think and here are the reasons why I and a bunch of other people think that”.)

Definitely more of an American thing, but one that needs to spread. That post and many others explain why. Outdoor cats are much more likely to get sick or die violent deaths, and they don’t live as long.

Plus, they have massive environmental impacts. They kill rodents, yes, but also birds and reptiles. Any small prey animal nicked by a cat’s claws or teeth that manages to escape is at a serious risk of dying a slow, agonizing death of bacteria-induced sepsis from the bacteria in the cat’s saliva. They’re also responsible for the decline of numerous bird species, and have entirely wiped out several native marsupials in Australia.

Basically, it all boils down to this. The only benefits to letting your cat outdoors (aside from rodent control, which has other options) are that they’re less likely to get bored or overweight. Those things can also be accomplished indoors with proper care and toys, with zero risk of infection and no violent deaths of small animals. The downsides include serious risk to your cat and to wildlife that encounter your cat.

would it be a problem to keep a pigeon and parrot in the same room? assuming they’re in different cages (of course), would they need separate out of cage time, or could they free fly together as long as they were supervised?

theramseyloft:

Not just separate flight times. They really shouldn’t even be caged in the same room.

Columbids are noise-sensitive and stressed by loud commotion.

Psitticines have such high decible comunication because they need to keep in touch over miles of distance. That’s just the way they talk.

But Psitticines are INCREDIBLY dangerous creatures to keep columbids anywhere near.

There is no psitticine on the planet too small to fatally injure a dove or pigeon.

Even a pacific parrotlet could kill a fully grown pigeon just with one good bite

It wouldn’t even have to break bone!

Bird blood has very limited clotting factors and they can bleed to death from a quicked toenail if some sort of styptic is not applied fast enough.

I have seen he aftermath when a love bird climbed into a dove’s cage and bit nearly half of her beak off while she was sitting on her eggs.

I have heard from dove owners, who were told that it was safe to cohabitate them, about their parakeet killing their dove.

A dove or pigeon in a house with one or more parrots is only ever safe while the parrot is caged, unless their out time is in an entirely different room and who ever is out is supervised at all times.

A flying columbid in the same room as a caged psitticine is NOT safe.

Doves or pigeons loose in a room with a caged parrot can be maimed or killed if the columbid lands on the psitticine’s cage and its foot or wing is grabbed and pulled through by the resident.

And keep in mind that the psitticines are NOT being malicious!

They bite and grab toys, furniture, and each other in curious play, and just have no way of knowing that the columbids can’t stand up to it and will be more grievously injured than another psitticine would have been.

If a parrot bites another parrot hard enough to hurt, the other parrot will retaliate and the first will let go.

Columbids have no way to defend themselves from or deter a curious psitticine that grabs too hard.

Alright. that’s it. I cannot fucking take it it anymore. Excuse my errors but I am PISSED.

I’ve seen this .gif on my dash several times, often accompanied by “omg so funny/i can’t stop laughing/turnt up/he’s having fun/etc. “ I’m sure a lot of people don’t realize that they are literally laughing at an extreme case of animal abuse. Birds have a very, very sensitive and delicate respiratory system. It’s so sensitive, in fact, that the smoke from simply cooking food around them can kill them.
Ever heard of the canary in a coal mine? This was practiced because birds react much more quickly to toxins in the air, and it would kill the canary before the toxins harmed the more resistant humans, alerting them to danger. Now, many mammals are sensitive to smoke. It’s true that you should never smoke around any pets, however, it will not immediately endanger a cat or dog from a single instance of exposure like it can a bird. That’s right, all it takes is ONE instance to give a bird lung cancer, infections, or possibly instant death.

THIS .GIF IS NOT FUNNY, IT IS AN IMAGE OF EXTREME IGNORANCE AND CRUELTY. Would you laugh at a puppy being fed a pound of chocolate, or a kitten drinking bleach? I don’t think so.

“Oh but the bird obviously likes it!”, yeah, I’m sure the puppy would be happily wagging away as it ate the chocolate, too. That’s because it feels good, tastes good, and because they trust their owners. Birds can have the intelligence equivalent to a four year old human child, so they learn to depend on and trust their owners. Lots of things taste and feel good that can kill humans, too!! You would eat a mushroom if it tasted good and you weren’t aware that is was deadly! Especially if your parents or friends handed it to you with an assurance of safety.

An animal can’t decide or vocalize it’s desire to use drugs, so why force it upon them?

Here is a small selection of notes I’ve seen on this post, as well as asks I’ve received. Notice the cries of “social justice warrior!“ (what?? how is that social justice? I don’t know.) Also, every. Single. Response. I’ve gotten to my polite, reasonable asks has been negative and accusatory.

(go through the notes. and if you don’t believe me, do a quick google search on the effects of smoke on birds. do it)

ANIMAL ABUSE IS UNFORGIVABLE. IF YOU WILLINGLY ENCOURAGE, TURN A BLIND EYE TO, LAUGH AT, OR PERPETRATE ANIMAL ABUSE- YOU ARE A PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT AND DESERVE NO SYMPATHY OR RESPECT. YOU ARE LITERAL TRASH.

**(it’s hard to tell if that is shisha or weed being smoked from the hookah, regardless, both are strong enough to intoxicate a small animal ,and both are packed full of toxins.)

Ummm… I’m pretty sure this is romantic. If he was following her around or doing this in front of her door it’s creepy, but a guy doing something that hurts literally no one to try to romance a woman is not a creep. You are just hyper sensitive.

??? Men literally do these things publicly to make women feel pressured to respond the way they want.

You know what is actually romantic?? Respecting boundaries and choices.

If he fucking HAD to do some stunt, he could of at least kept it between him and her, not turned it into a public spectacle so she would be forced to respond or be labeled a cold bitch for holding her ground.

4 months they were together.

He got punched in the side of the head and told to stop being a fucking stalker. This isn’t romantic at all. It’s controlling, manipulative and evil. He was embarrassing a woman he dated for 4 months, stalking her, ruining her life. He was and is a totally pathetically creeper

I’m wandering around Whole Foods unattended (left the bae sleeping) and there’s a person here doing a demonstration on the uses for essential oils around the home and I may have to fight them.

Just for the record, tea tree oil is toxic to dogs and cats and you should not “drop a few drops on their bed to disinfect it”. Tea tree oil is only safe for your pets when thoroughly diluted, the safety range being a dilution of 0.1 to 1%. Most tea tree oil bottles come at 100%.

You are potentially dropping liquid death onto your pets bed where it will certainly come into contact with their skin and may be ingested when they lick themselves or their bed. Also never ever orally administer tea tree oil to your pet, I dont care what that one blogger and their nice clean aesthetic said, tea tree oil is toxic to dogs and cats and you will make them sick or possibly even kill them. It should only ever be used topically but only ever at the correct dilution and after the consultation of your vet who will most certainly have a better non lethal solution for your furry friend.

Now. If you’ll excuse me, I’m off to fight a Young Living sales rep. Hold my cart.

Their response when I quietly sidled up to them (I’m not an actual asshole who yells at people while they are doing their job) and informed them that some of the information (all of it, actually) was wrong, the sales rep looked immediately remorseful, told me they knew it was wrong, but that they had a script to follow in order to maximize sales, and that if they didn’t make their target goal they didn’t get paid.

So just in case you give a shit about ethical business practices and your pets (not to mention yourselves!): Do Not Buy Young Living Essential Oils

Not only do I suspect they are synthetic based (meaning myself and several others with respiratory allergies have reacted badly to them, in ways we do not react to actual pure oils which are obtained through either steam or cold press. I do not trust their “authentic” claims, and I have worked with a lot of essential oils over the last decade and a half. Also, the whole “therapeutic grade” things doesn’t actually mean shit. It’s not a standard recognized by any official regulating authority in the US, AUS, UK or other parts of Europe. Always dillute your oils with a carrier oil for topical application and for the love of god stop drinking them. You want the supplement not the essential oil, it’s a separate thing!) they also do not care that they are offering dangerous consumer advice, but are actively enforcing it. Do not buy into their pyramid scheme. Do not buy or sell from them.

I had to be That person who asked to speak to the manager of my local WH today because holy shit this, could have straight up murdered someone’s cat or caused their dog to have seizures. Their response to my concern was a befuddled “but it’s natural…” and I had to respond with “so is arsenic but I don’t see you selling it in the supplements aisle as a vital mineral”. She had to straight up think about that for a second before it clicked.

Natural =/= safe. Be careful and educated and always double check your sources.

Nono, it’s not just suspicion. People have sent samples to companies for testing, and found that the lab results showed that Young Living uses synthetic materials in their products. Only one of these that I know of was not discredited by the company, because that person was the only one who thought to send their package directly to the testing company, instead of to their own home. The other people who paid out of their own pocket to send their oils that they bought (at a fairly high price point, mind you) have confronted YL with their findings, and YL is claiming that the oils were tampered with. (They weren’t. But Young Living can make this claim, because the oils went to that person’s house. OBVIOUSLY the only reason any lab would find any synthetic materials in their pure brand is due to tampering. Obviously.
That is sarcasm, in case it wasn’t blindingly clear already.)

tl;dr: they’re extremely shady

*deep breath* I found this out because my dad started selling for doTerra, and I was worried about his practices based on some things I’d read, and I wanted to be informed so I joined a bunch of facebook groups.

No, really, there’s a bunch of super informed people there. Most of them are waayyyy more into this than I am. Some of them are aromatherapists, but a lot are laypeople like me, who wanted to learn things and be safe. (The best group I’ve found thus far is the Eden’s Garden group. Eden’s Garden is a good company that has lower prices because they sell directly to you. I think. That’s what they say.)

Anyway, I’ve also done a bit of my own research, and if you look the groups that are there to provide information for other people usually have organized files and everything.

Bottom line: this is common. People in multi level marketing groups are usually not educated enough to be telling people how to use their products, as a general rule. They often tell you that using oils ‘neat’ (applying them directly to the skin) is Just Fine for oils like Lavender (this isn’t true; you can develop a sensitivity to the oil and become allergic to it over time, even if you don’t react strongly at first); they typically advocate putting oils in your water (which is basically using them ‘neat’, only on your intestines–I don’t buy the styrofoam cup example, as the chemical makeup of styrofoam is different from that of your mouth, throat, and stomach, but it’s still not great–); and if you question them they usually act confused, brush it off, argue, or tell you they’ll talk to their upline manager–the person who is making money off of their sales, and is therefore motivated to get the to sell product.

There’s also a lot of commotion in some of the groups about diffusing in public areas. Preschool teachers in particular are getting into essential oils and oh it’s such a great classroom remedy! I have a blend that calms the kids and another that keeps allergies away! The problem with this is that you don’t know if someone is going to be allergic to the oils you are diffusing, and that means that anyone who walks into the room could be in physical danger, because they are now inhaling diffused essential oils

Examples:

  1. asthma sometimes
  2. just last week, I tried to offer a door to door salesperson some natural bugspray. He was allergic to cedar. Guess what natural essential oil was in that spray?
  3. I just saw a conversation on my feed about how the allergy essential oil blends actually make some people feel stopped up. That’s, um, the opposite of what they’re supposed to do, so if you’re in a classroom setting, and you decide to diffuse a blend that will help with everyone’s seasonal allergies, you can actually cause more problems.

So it’s kind of a health risk that no one really has given any consent for, since this is still sort of a new thing for many people, and a lot of people who know shit about essential oils are up in arms about it. (Like, most people are gonna be fine… but that’s like giving everyone pb&j for lunch because most people are fine with peanut butter. The one person with the peanut allergy is now sick, hospitalized, or dead. Good job!)

Bottom line: there’s proof that the Young Living Execs are shady, doTerra is a bit better but not much, NOW oils have a good rep I think? and Eden’s Garden has a great reputation, from what I’ve read. Plant Therapy is said to be good too.

Also please do not ingest essential oils unless a qualified aromatherapist tells you to do so, and if you do use them in food products or on your skin, always make sure to dilute them with another type of oil. Oil and water do not mix. This is elementary level knowledge.

(Carrier oils are typically the kind you might cook with, like Olive, Coconut, Safflower, etc.)

Thank you for confirming this for me. The few times I’ve been exposed to YL Essential oils I’ve suffered from respiratory distress and migraines, so I knew something was up. I just never had the means to have them officially tested myself and went out of my way to avoid them.

Also thank you for pointing out that people should refrain from using scented oils in spaces like school rooms—particularly in preschool age classrooms. I used to react badly enough to my teacher’s perfumes as a child, I can’t imagine what would have happened if they were diffusing synthetic scents through the air either. Or even just oils from the menthol family.

Young children in particular are susceptible to respiratory distress or even failure when exposed to certain menthol oils (which I’ve covered extensively on my blog before) which is why I always urge against using anything like wintergreen, any of the mint family or eucalyptus oils in an air diffuser if you have children under the age of 12 in your home. And even then if your young person starts complaining of headaches and fuzziness after exposure to such things, you should top using them immediately. You should especially not apply any of those things to them in a topical ointment. I have midwife friends who won’t even use vicks vapor rub on any child under the age of 7 due to how severely small bodies can be affected by them.

Back when I still worked in alternative therapies, even before I understood what was setting my own allergies off, I would always ask if clients had scent allergies or asthma. If they did then I wouldn’t use any perfumed products on those days, on my person or in the area I was working in. It’s been hard to find health therapists who will afford me the same consideration 😦

Other brands which appear to be allergy safe for me in terms of not using synthetic elements include Veriditas Botanicals and Sun Leaf Naturals. In case anyone with similar allergies to mine, are wanting to try some decent oils. I also predominantly use jojoba oil as my carrier oil, as I find it doesn’t clog my skin pores quite so badly as coconut does.

long post but it’s full of excellent info. @ladydragon76

Pennywise is actually genderfluid

iwilleatyourenglish:

that-pissed-off-tolkien-blogger:

If you read the book, Stephen King specifically says that IT (the shape-shifting monster also known as Pennywise) is female and pregnant. This is why the Losers’ Club has to come back and finish what they started when they were kids.

However, IT chooses primarily male forms or genderless forms to kill and terrorize the children with.

So, IT specifically chooses to fluctuate between female, male, and genderless presentations, making IT genderfluid.

Pennywise for genderfluid Icon!

Pennywise:

  • Is an ancient, eldritch being from another dimension with a form that humans cannot even begin to comprehend and is, thus, unlikely to give a fuck about gender
  • Can shapeshift into people’s worst fears and does so frequently to terrorize its victims
  • Feeds off of fear
  • Literally tears children

    apart

    and eats them

  • Keeps an entire town under a spell in which no adults can truly recognize the suffering of children, even when they’re being assaulted, sexually abused, abducted, and murdered
  • Delights in the violent, homophobic assault of a gay man before taking the man from his attackers and ripping him apart while his lover watches
  • Delights in racist violence and was fueled by the KKK’s presence in Derry, as well as a white supremacists’ torching of a black nightclub

the “Babadook is a gay icon” thing was a joke born from a technical error on Netflix. let’s… not associate evil, child eating monsters with LGBT+ people maybe

terrifying your own child into submission makes you an abuser.

watching your child cry and screaming at them to stop and invalidating their pain and reasons for crying makes you an abuser.

staring at your child in disgust and contempt after they displease you makes you an abuser.

threatening to your child to take away their basic resources if they don’t give you exactly what you want makes you an abuser.

forcing your child to feel ashamed for not living up to your ideals makes you an abuser.

using slurs, hateful names and insults on your own child without any regard to what it does to their mental health makes you an abuser.

forcing your child to chase impossible expectations and making them feel like they’re worthless for not achieving them makes you an abuser.

acting like your child is a burden and a waste of space and blaming their illness/disability/depression on it makes you an abuser.

behaving like your child will never amount to anything and isn’t worth any resources and nurturing makes you an abuser.

making your child feel like they’re never good enough makes you an abuser.

if your child’s heart is hurting because they know no matter what they do and how hard they try they will always be a failure in your eyes, you are an abuser.

if your child can’t look at themselves without self hatred because they had to look at themselves from your perspective and all they saw is disgust and hatred, you’re an abuser.

If your child is struggling to believe they have the right to live and to be cared and loved, if they can’t stop hearing your hateful voice putting them down and using their every action to prove they’re worthless, you’re an abuser.

If you watched your child in pain and ensured them they deserved it, you’re an abuser.

If your child can’t love themselves from how badly you hated them, you’re an abuser.

Guys, this NEEDS more reblogs.

People go through this all the time regularly, I can hardly name a family in my town whose children don’t tell me stories like the ones above.

Emotional abuse is a real problem these days and the children in those households don’t know that it’s not normal, or at least it shouldn’t be normal, until they are older. If they ever find out at all, that what they went through wasn’t right.

It is not a tool of effective parenting.

And to those children and teens who are going through this today, you are not alone. I know feels like it but you aren’t. You have to do what is best for you sometimes, if distancing yourself from your parents makes it better, do that. If talking to your best friend about it makes you feel better, please do that. This won’t last forever, you will grow up and move out and see that the world loves you.

You are beautiful and strong and I believe you can make it through this.

So some dude got sent to the hospital with cyanide poisoning because he was eating cherries and decided, for some fucking reason, to crack the pits open and eat the meat inside.

“I didn’t think nothin’ of it. Thought it was just a seed.”

“Deep breath”

I SWEAR TO THE FUCKIN GODS…..

(cue 25 minutes of unintelligible yelling)

….and that is why being separated from our food’s origins and not knowing anything about botany is what is wrong with the world today goddamnit.

I bet some people would eat castor beans too. Or yew. Or just fuckin’ snack on some hemlock because it’s natural, man.

Fucking incredible.

LIKE IT TAKES SOME FUCKING EFFORT TO GET A CHERRY PIT OPEN FUCKING W H Y

Question: Is it the same with plums? I used to do that occasionally when I ate dried and seasoned Asian plums as a kid.

Yes.

Plum pits do not contain as much as cherry, but they do.

Do not eat stone fruit pits, people. Or bitter almonds.

They all have cyanide in them.

Oh boy, apricot kernels. The amount of people I see lauding those as a “cure for cancer” is… demoralizing. I can’t find it right now but I believe there was a mother in the past few years who was taken to court for child endangerment/neglect for feeding those to her very young child as a cancer treatment.

I saw this horror last year, and yelled for an entire hour.

To be fair, I bet if you die of cyanide poisoning the cancer won’t kill you.

I have been wanting to use these photos for months.

The recommendation is to only eat 3 in one hour. because that is just the most filling snack and of course they will stop at three.

But then they say DON’T EAT MORE THEN 10 A DAY.

It’s not even FDA approved. “may be toxic”.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Just because it’s food for another creature doesn’t mean it’s fine for you.

Best case scenario it’s like grass which is basically neutral- it’s generally not going to kill you but there’s no nutrition for humans in it, and enough will probably make you sick.

Worst case scenario it’s something like belladonna berries which taste sweet but will kill you stone cold dead.

Same for the wrong kind of mushrooms, other berries, leaves and barks. Before consuming, CHECK. If you can’t check, don’t put it in your mouth.

Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

I’ve been saying this for so long, oh my gosh.

apple seeds have the same cyanide innards, but obviously not in such high quantities. you’d have to eat like 10 apple’s worth of seeds to feel the effect. for that matter, just swallowing a cherry pit whole isn’t going to do any harm, it’ll pass through your body before the outer layer breaks down. but deliberately cracking this stuff open and eating it isn’t the best idea

Literally cherry pits used to be used to make poison. Like, you crack the pits open, boil em for 8 hours, change the pits out for a new batch three times. Reduce the liquid and add honey and sugar. Bam.

hello internet. please stop believing things like this. One would have to eat a shit ton of cherry pits to get cyanide poisoning. A man did not get sent to the hospital from eating 3 cherry pits.

….he literally did did you not look at the news article I linked.

He was cracking them open and eating the meat.

Swallowing a pit whole won’t hurt you, since our digestive acids are not strong enough to dissolve the shell of the pit. But if  you crack them open and eat the cyanide filled meat, then you’re gonna have a bad day.

Me; “Look at this thing that actually happened, as proved by this guy’s confession and the testimony of trained medical professionals.”

You; “LOL fake news.”

*quietly but emphatically* for the love of gods.

vet-and-wild:

the-awkward-turt:

listsoflifehacks:

This List Could Save Your Dog’s Life

These are good for immediate first aid or if you can’t get to a vet, but in most cases you should consult a vet first!

Benadryl is also a useful for reducing swelling for mild venomous snake bites (but always go to the vet first if you suspect your pet has been bitten by a venomous snake!!).

I really really hate these “pet hacks” sort of things. They contain over generalized and sometimes flat out wrong information that can be seriously harmful for a dog. There’s so many problems with this infographic and I’m not even able to touch on whether or not the dosages are even remotely safe (I’m still a baby vetling and haven’t learned that yet!) but the fact that these are listed on a random site with no veterinary source should be a huge red flag.

1. If you think your dog has ingested something toxic, you should talk to pet poison control and/or your vet (it doesn’t cost any money to talk to your vet on the phone!) before trying to induce vomiting. There are situations where it is not appropriate to induce vomiting, which can include the ingestion of corrosive material, passage of time from ingestion, and other scenarios determined by a vet, not Dr. Google. Pet owners also tend to give too much hydrogen peroxide, which can cause very damaging (and even deadly!) ulcers and irritation. Also hydrogen peroxide should never be used for cats. I’ve never heard of mineral oil and milk of magnesia being suggested for toxin ingestion but the lack of a reputable veterinary source makes me very skeptical.

2. Ok so the common theme is going to be don’t medicate your pet without talking to a veterinarian. Just like humans, animals can have deadly allergic reactions to insect stings. If you think your dog is having an allergic reaction, call your vet. Benadryl isn’t going to stop a dog from going into anaphylactic shock. Also, again, sketchy internet source should make you skeptical about dosages.

3. What is the source on this? I’ve NEVER heard anything about static electricity making dogs anxious. I ended up doing a little research on this one because it does sound super fascinating, but all I found was a few blog posts and vague references to a “study” that wasn’t actually included in the article. I’d buy that static electricity is unpleasant and could contribute to storm phobia, but I did not see any compelling evidence that it could be a significant factor. Noise phobia isn’t uncommon–think about how many animals become agitated by fireworks around the 4th of July. Rubbing dryer sheets on your dog isn’t going to do anything to help with noise phobia. A dog with serious noise phobia is going to need behavioral management and possibly anti-anxiety drugs.

4. This ones ok. Using a rock or tennis ball as an obstacle can help slow down a fast eater. Slow feeders, Kongs, and puzzle feeders are also good alternatives and provide enrichment as well.

5. Yikes. Just, yikes. First of all, owners are not qualified to make any kind of medical diagnosis for their dog nor are they trained to be able to choose the correct medication for a condition. How does an owner know that their dog just has an “upset stomach” vs. gastric ulcers? Or that their pain isn’t being caused by a cancerous mass? Do you think aspirin is going to be sufficient for an osteosarcoma? By giving over the counter medications without consulting a vet, you are delaying treatment, potentially making a medical condition worse, giving drugs that could interfere with veterinary prescriptions, and even causing a life threatening reaction. Also, aspirin is rarely recommended by veterinarians because it can cause ulcers and impaired clotting. There are much safer pain medications that we can use. I’m especially upset about seeing multiple medications for diarrhea because there are MANY causes of diarrhea and a lot of them can be life threatening (as is chronic diarrhea). If your dog has chronic diarrhea, they need to be taken to a vet, not given pepto bismol for something that you don’t even know the cause of.

6. This one is ok as well, never leave your dog in a hot car.
