No you don’t even know these birds call actually sounds like its saying go away and what it does is it hangs around large groups of herbivores and when a predator shows up it will just start shouting GO AWAY GO AWAY and then all the gazelles and zebras and such will take off.
What gets me is that initial pause. The bird knows this song. He knows when the drum comes in. Being able to anticipate musical rhythm is a form of intelligence very few species have, and this is the most remarkable example of it I’ve ever seen in a bird. The cockatoo knew to wait for the drums.
Photo of the Day – The Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise (Diphyllodes respublica) is an Indonesian endemic. When it displays, the male puffs out its chest to reveal a striking green. It will clear away any green leaves on the ground below it to ensure it is the star of the show in the eyes of its potential mate. It is an incredible thing to witness!
