White-necked heron (Ardea pacifica)

The white-necked heron is a species of heron
that is found on most of the Australian continent wherever freshwater
habitats exist. It is also found in parts of Indonesia, New Guinea and
New Zealand, but is uncommon in Tasmania.
The populations of this species in Australia are known to be nomadic
like most water birds in Australia, moving from one water source to
another often entering habitats they have not previously occupied,
taking advantage of flooding and heavy rain where the surplus of food
allows them to breed and raise their young. The body size/length is between 76–106 cm. The diet consists of freshwater mussels, fish, shrimp, freshwater crayfish, spiders,
dragonfly nymphs, damselflies, praying mantis, grasshoppers, water
beetles, lizards, young ducklings, young freshwater rat, and amphibians.

If you’re in need of ‘faith in humanity: restored’ news, a duck suddenly appeared on a remote island in the Pacific and no one’s sure how he even made it (the closest landmass, New Zealand, is about 1700 miles away) but, like, the entire population is now devoted to the duck’s wellbeing and that’s the first duck they’ve ever seen so they named him and Googled what he eats (not bread!) and built him an artificial pond and now ‘there are concerns he might be lonely’, so there’s talk of importing other ducks to keep him company and yeah, the world is still batshit insane but isn’t this the sweetest thing?

Grindel is a rare “white” dragon from gnomeworld, being a blue dragon with a late-onset leucistic condition. She started turning white after maturity, and her mate rejected her because she lost the attractive blue color. Heartbroken by this, she left the coast of her childhood and now lives alone along a high mountain stream. The protagonists encounter her during their journey, and after a very tense first meeting they strike an uneasy deal– passage over a ravine in exchange for medical help on an injured leg. Grindel trails them afterwards with the excuse of needing fresh bandages and disinfectant, but it eventually grows apparent that she’s mostly returning because she enjoys their company.

Non-canon: I drew her in crew socks because someone on Discord said her legs looked cold.
