i love that we and cats share pareidolia (seeing patterns where they dont exist), but instead of seeing faces in everyday objects like us, they see snakes

that computer cord? snake. string? small snake. cucumber? short fat straight snake

snake pareidolia is one of the strongest things in human minds too! people report freezing mid-stride before being consciously aware of a snake in front of them, and the same happens with coiled rope, etc. in humans and other primates. it’s even been proposed that the need to detect snakes was a factor in the development of primates’ insanely good color eyesight

It’s because snakes are wonderful and we must stop and admire them at any cost

look at this absolutely FANTASTIC saltwater version of my eels. god. what a man. perfection exists and its name is diademichthys lineatus

This is an urchin clingfish! They hang around longspine sea urchins for protection from predators, and may nip at the urchin’s tube feet. They are adorable but strangely hard to keep in captivity.

I agree that anthropomorphizing animals can be misleading and sometimes dangerous, but people who insist that animals “don’t have emotions” of any kind absolutely baffle me. What… what do you think an emotion even is?

Human emotions are processed through language and complicated social nuances and our perspective-taking abilities – all the shit we call ‘higher thinking’ – but ultimately IMHO they’re chemicals and sensations and instincts that we ascribe meaning to in varying ways. I don’t think that’s inglorious or unbeautiful at all. Claiming that animals don’t have emotions at all is just as ridiculous as claiming that male dogs feel emasculated by wearing pink collars.

Im trying to prove a point to my mum

Chinese fandoms are currently experiencing an actual Purge right now. Every fandom. Accounts are getting banned, all shipping wars has been put on hold. Everyone’s hiding their porn and moving them to ao3.

There’s reward money involved. A recent update to censorship law raised the maximum reward for reporting illicit online materials to 50k yuan (7000 USD), so some people are reporting porn like crazy right now, and apparently, BL fandoms have been especially targeted, where some even more tame things got maliciously misreported.

Anyway, it’s a mess. Content creators are just disappearing off the face of the internet left and right. Expect an influx of Chinese porn fics on AO3.

Well… if there’s one thing out of this mess… nothing bands warring ships/fandoms like censorship…

Seems like the cash reward will be

600,000 yuan ($86,000) from December 1st…!

Tweet pleading for people not to repost any fanart taken offline by Chinese creators

Hey guys, if some awesome person in China translated your fic into Chinese or created fan art, you really should spread the word! This could affect someone you know!

This is also a call out to all you fuckwits that repost art on Tumblr, twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. Your negligence hurts people.

^^^

This is literally shitty and it has become worse and worse

Hopefully it will stop before long but just take care of how yiou take your stances on ao3 or what’s happening with Tumblr

A chinese homoerotic novel writer is sentenced to 10 years to prison because of “illegal publication”*  and “spread of obscene materials”. After that, China government set up bounty for reporting “illegal publication”. Everyone on weibo, lofter etc. is deleting thier posts.

China is using this act as a way of controling the freedom of speech, it’s not just a matter of “no homo”. They just use the fandom content creators as an easy target and a way to scare people off from writing and publishing things the government doesn’t like.

China is living the Nineteen Eighty-Four novel. Please don’t post chinese fan works, especially not with their original chinese artists/writers right now. You could literally ruin their life.

* in China every book has to be approved by the government before
publication. Anything against the government or with “the wrong idea” will be banned. Their government didn’t pay too much attention to fan books before, but in recent years, they are tightening their grip on their people. Fandom and their activities as a whole has become a target because 1) fandom and their creative community make self-publishing a thing and China doesn’t like that the people know it’s easy to print stuffs (to spread unwanted information/ideas etc. 2) fandom and their creative community is the easiest and obvious target because of the general anti LBGT+ envirnment, general public will support the gornment for “cleansing the society from obscenity” withouth thingking about 1)

Anyway Announcement: If you own a birb, you can’t light a candle. The candles that are birb safe are very very very rare and it’s better to be safe than sorry because their little lungs can’t handle the particles emitted! So if you have a birb and want to light Shabbat Candles, or a Hanukkiah, may I recommend instead: Electric ones

Do they fulfill the mitzvah under the strictest interpretations? No

Do they work for more progressive Jewish movements and help you to keep your little angels safe? Yes

Don’t shame people for using electric candles for Jewish mitzvot, especially if they have a pet that requires it

This has been a PSA

i dont have a bird but like even if you light with the bird on the other room? in what conditions is the candle bad for the bird? is it something that linger through the air for a long time?

Right to clarify:

Even the smallest amount of vapour can hurt your bird if it’s breathing connected airflow. So you need to have it in a room that isn’t connected through ventilation. The only candles that are okay for birds are ones that are pure beeswax without metal inside to stabilise the wick; since birds can’t cough, any abrasive or toxic particle emitted into the air will get into their lungs and damage them over time. The smoke especially – we might not notice it, but they will. Keeping them in another room that’s connected via the vents isn’t any better, unfortunately, than having them in the same room. And having candles with metal or materials other than beeswax burning in the house at all is a danger, regardless of what ventilation is present – especially because of those lungs and you don’t know how long it’ll linger.

Source: Myself (an evolutionary biologist), my friend (a veterinarian), my other friend (a liscenced bird rehabber), my avian vet. Sorry, I’m on a bus and don’t really have the ability to get direct sources

@jewish-education

Thank you so much @jewish-kulindadromeus.

His house is quite weird and was built in several parts so I think it might have more than one vent system? He might also use special candles? Or be a bad bird owner. But good to know that there’s no easy way.
