GDPR and Online Commissions

hixxiart:

Hey gang, I’m back to talk about a new law coming in in the EU and how it will effect both online artist and commissioners.

It’s called
the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and it effects everyone in the European Union.

It comes into effect from the 25th May 2018.

GDPR is like a newer, stricter version of data protection. You can read all about it in detail over here. But I’d wager a lot of you don’t have the time or the inclination to read vast amounts of details regarding this so let me lay down some general info and tell you how this effects you.

image

In a nutshell, GDPR is a new set of rules on how data is stored and used in the EU, especially on a business front. If you’re an artist taking commissions, you have to be VERY explicit in the how the personal data you are collecting of your customers is stored and handled. Personal data can be anything from emails, names, addresses (if you ship out physical products) to photographs of people (imagine if someone send some photos as reference images, as an example).

For most of us, we’re not selling on huge amounts of data to advertising companies for an extra buck, but you now have to be EXTREMELY CLEAR about this.

So here’s what I suggest you do.

image

Firstly,

You cannot store info of someone under 16 without parental permission from the 25th May holy shit guys.

And this age fluctuates from country to country, please see a full list here:

https://www.betterinternetforkids.eu/web/portal/practice/awareness/detail?articleId=3017751

What does this mean?

If someone approaches you for a commission and you are in the EU then you need to ascertain their age which means they gonna need to show you some ID. A scan of a passport or a driving license is probably going to be your best bet and people aren’t going to like this but it’s now the law and do you want to be slapped with fines and jail time?

Any information to be stored on needs to be explicitly stated in regards to its use – if you don’t have a TOS maybe now is the time to write one.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you’re probably not selling your customer’s details on but just a little note to say that you will probably be doing the following:

Collecting emails for sending invoices and commission files to, and you may be storing on email/paypal accounts. Make it clear that your customers’ details will not be sent to third parties or added to mailing lists.

This should pretty much cover you on the basics. Again, you’ll need to be transparent and up front about any personal data you’re collecting. Emails. Names. Ages. Addresses. Religious deets. Anything like that. Please be 100% crystal clear with your clients as to how you’re using it and how you’re storing it. Honestly writing a TOS and asking your clients to read it is a great way to avoid you throwing down mountains of text every time you get a commission.

Mixing bleach and vinegar produces toxic chlorine gas.

Mixing bleach and ammonia produces toxic chloramine vapor.

Obviously, don’t mix any cleaning products when doing housekeeping, unless you have very carefully read the warning labels and know exactly how they’ll react.

But also…. pee contains ammonia. Urea in fresh pee breaks down to create more ammonia, so old, stale piss has a higher concentration of ammonia and will have a nastier reaction with bleach.

i found out recently that the very first trees did not rot when they died because the microbes that decompose trees hadnt evolved yet…which makes sense but it’s weird to think about. this actually caused a huge change in the climate at the time and many of these trees turned into coal because of it…

like imagine a tree falling in the forest and the trunk just stays there for years and years with little change, and it only goes away when it is buried under dirt. that’s weird.

obviously they were still working on the worldbuilding back then

imagine all the lag from those trunks laying around. glad they patched those microbes in

So y’all talk about this like it’s a joke, but the exact same time is happening today with plastics, except today’s microbes are a bit quicker on the uptake. They’re still new at it, but Earth’s decomposers are hard at work learning how to eat polyester.

*ancient microbe voice* kids these days have it so easy. mutating to feed on new materials within a century? In my day it took us a millenium at minimum! we had to metabolize uphill in the snow both ways!

*even more ancient microbe voice* pfeh, typical oxygen-breather attitude. you think you had it rough but YOU have those fancy MITOCHONDRIA.

full offense but this obsession with women’s bodies being able to “bounce back” after pregnancy is absolutely fucking weird and abnormal. women who, after pushing out a human being from their fucking vaginas, are instantly back in the gym because the very idea of a woman looking like she’s been pregnant is even more proof of our obsession with women never looking like we’re actual human beings and instead like we’re fantasy images who people (read: men) must never see as imperfect.

this situation has definitely been worsened by social media. women are always seeing other women who fulfill societal ideals of conventional beauty and so we’re always comparing ourselves to them and always trying to achieve their level of perfection. that and the idea that women literally are never allowed to look imperfect, and our bodies must always be in acceptable shape.

Okay that virus that’s going around, is seriously fucking scary. I got the same thing on my computer about a week ago and I got rid of it, but it took a lot. This type of virus can control your browser, it can control your webcam, it can control all your files, and track you.

If you’ve seen the post already, do not click on the user if someone like this follows you.

image

If you do on accident, you will be taken to an FBI site, which tells you you’ve viewed pornography and stuff. Looks a little like this…

It asks you to pay a fine. ITS NOT REAL. DO NOT PAY IT. You won’t be able to leave the page, or close your browser. Your computer is probably infected now, and you need to remove it.

  1. Click ctrl-alt-delete at the same time and open task manager. Shut down your browser. Uninstall it completely.
  2. Reset your computer to the last known date when you didn’t have the virus.
  3. Install and Run malawarebytes. It’s a free service, that get’s rid of all bugs in your computer. The download link is hereMost antivirus softwares can’t detect things like this, so your best bet is to just download it. Run a full scan to ensure your computer is clean.
  4. Restart your computer, and you should be fine.
  5. The main thing here is to not panic. I did, and it just makes the situation worse than it really is.

If you have seen a post about it, you’ll see that icon, and a URL with random letters. Please don’t risk it, you’ll have to work really hard to get it off your computer. Be careful, and DO NOT PANIC. Here is another tutorial on how to get rid of it,

Any more questions? Feel free to ask me. I got this off two of our computers, so it’s possible. BE SAFE

here is a link to a tutorial for how to remove this if you are on a Mac

THIS IS NOT A DRILL. I somehow clicked on one of these things the other day and wowie was I in for a world of hell. Thankfully I got it under control and my I’m a-ok now but you REALLY DONT WANT TO GET THIS SHIT ON YOUR COMPUTER.

Mobile users stay cautious too.
