todaysbird:

crows and ravens have demostrated a knowledge of ‘fairness’ – and demand equal treatment. researchers did an ‘inequity test’ on the birds. some birds received cheese, a high value treat, and others received a piece of grape, which was not desirable. those who received the grape started refusing to accept it. the researchers then performed an ‘effort control’ test. some birds were given a piece of cheese with nothing required of them. other birds could choose from cheese or a grape – but had to exchange a token for them. again, the birds that were being treated unfairly refused to cooperate.

Not a single lie in sight……

Hello, college grad that actually wrote an award winning paper on this topic! Here’s some knowledge I’d like to share: There’s actually been studies as to why it’s usually white kids, a large conclusion amongst the criminology community is that those that often have more privileged lives (white kids in our society’s case) are less adept to dealing with stress and denial. Whereas minorities and others are more likely to cope and function normally despite stressors because of the constant stressors that come from systematic racism and/or other platforms of more limited priviledge.

TL;DR: It’s usually a white kid because their privilege incacipated their ability to learn how to handle stress/ denial/ whatever without acting out. The less privileged are done used to the bs and thus typically dont turn to extreme measures as coping mechanisms.

The majority of shooters are white, male, and have a history of violence against women. We cannot ignore gender when discussing this issue.

If the ocean ever disappears DONT GO LOOKING FOR IT… go in the other direction

i know this sounds like a shitpost but isn’t this like, real advice regarding tsunamis

Yes this was about hurricane Irma it is not a shitpost

This is actually really good advice so let me elaborate a bit: if you notice the tide is retreating very quickly at a very odd time of day, get as far away from water and as high up as you can. I live along the ocean and a long time ago we had a small tsunami and a relative of mine tells me how her father saw the tides retreating so he just picked her up and just ran, which probably saved their lives.

So yeah DONT LOOK FOR THE MISSING OCEAN just run away

ocean not lost, ocean is actually winding up to kick you very hard in the nuts.

CROW BABIES

no!!!!

this is a corncrake chick, also commonly misidentified as a rail’s chick! crow babies are MUCH uglier…

putrid little man

baby boy

Above, a precocial (mobile at birth, cute fluffball) baby, like chickens and ducks have. They’re able to run around and pick up food and act like birds. You see this in ground-dwelling species like shorebirds, where they can run after the adult. Downside, they need to be incubated for comparatively long times in the egg.

Below, an altricial (nakey and helpless at birth, terrible ugly beast) baby, like most songbirds have. Baby crows start out nakey, floppy little sock-puppet things that can’t really move and have to have food stuffed down their throat by adults. They hatch from the egg much sooner, and can be more easily contained in a nest, but are useless on their own.

There are a lot of times I feel like just…flipping the vegan script.

It’s not ‘polyester’ it’s plastic

It’s not ‘vegan leather’ it’s plastic

Its not ‘faux fur’ it’s plastic

Plastic is a pollutant and causes far more damage to the environment both now and in the future than leather or wool.

Please stop telling me that the Plastic Lyfe is the only life, it is not. My leather shoes will last a decade where pleather is lucky to last 12 months. Leather (and wool) decompose and are renewable. Plastic is neither of those.

THANK YOUUUUUUU~

A single wash cycle of plastic-based fiber (polyester, poly fleece, faux fur) may release 700,000 pieces of microplastic into our waters. Nasty stuff.

aw dangit

Plastics are also petroleum products, so the impact of their production compounds the impact of their waste!

Especially since non-food-safe plastics are barely subject to regulation as-is & the short product lifespan is considered a feature, not a bug— because it makes people have to go out & buy more new plastic whatevers whenever the old ones wear out or get tossed.

Veganism can absolutely be approached with an environmental angle, but choosing plastic shoes over leather & acrylic socks over wool does about as much to save the world as the last (or next) oil pipeline leak. You’re not a hero because you choose to wear vinyl. You’re just the douche wearing vinyl.

Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry, animals aren’t killed just for the leather. If leather products didn’t exist, the hides would go to waste.

Wool doesn’t harm sheep to harvest. The sheep are bothered a couple times a year for a haircut, and in return they get food, housing, and safety from predators. Find yourself a certified humane wool farm and use their products if you’re really worried.

Fur farms are absolutely awful as far as animal welfare and need to vanish, but fur, real or otherwise, is primarily used as decoration on most garments. That one’s relatively easy to avoid.

Note to vacationing non-Americans: while it’s true that America doesn’t always have the best food culture, the food in our restaurants is really not representative of what most of us eat at home.  The portions at Cheesecake Factory or IHOP are meant to be indulgent, not just “what Americans are used to.”

If you eat at a regular American household, during a regular meal where they’re not going out of their way to impress guests, you probably will not be served twelve pounds of chocolate-covered cream cheese.  Please bear this in mind before writing yet another “omg I can’t believe American food” post.

Also, most American restaurant portions are 100% intended as two meals’ worth of food. Some of my older Irish relatives still struggle with the idea that it’s not just not rude to eat half your meal and take the rest home, it’s expected. (Apparently this is somewhat of an American custom.)

Opening the fridge the following day and finding delicious, professionally prepared food sitting there waiting for me is one of the greatest joys I know.

WAIT ARE LEFTOVERS IN A DOGGIE BAG NOT A THING IN OTHER COUNTRIES

This leftover quirk would’ve been great to know before going to America because your country confused the shit out of me.

Canada does basically the same thing as America here. Eating the whole dish in one sitting isn’t a faux pas or anything (except maybe if it means delaying the rest of your group while you slowly demolish an enormous dish by yourself) but if you come to a stop while there’s still food on your plate the waitstaff will usually offer to box it up for you, and this isn’t, like, a trick question or anything.

I’m p sure I gained 10kg while in Ohio because I tried to finish my meals at IHOP

I’M DYING

Day 3 of 5

“Dear Citizen,

In order to deliver on our promise to save America, we knew we needed to tackle our country’s biggest issue: wealth inequality. The richest 0.1% of Americans have as much wealth as the bottom 90%.

Our lawyers wouldn’t let us pursue our first choice – a campaign to eat all the rich people and live in their homes – so we settled for something more achievable. Today, Card Against Humanity has redistributed your wealth.

Using the survey you filled out when you signed up, we identified the 100 poorest recipients and sent them each  check for $1,000. To see how this $1,000 is impacting these peoples lives, read their stories at CardsAgainstHumanityRedistributesYourWealth.com. The next 10,000 poorest recipients got a $15 refund check.

You got nothing. And if you don’t like it, tough titties.

I love you,

Cards Against Humanity”

I was one of the 100 to get the check from these folks, and holy shit I was CACKLING at the hurt people on Facebook. Some people only cared about their precious $15 when it helped the poor.

Congrats! I’m thrilled that some of my $$$ went to people who needed it.

I went to their website for this to see if info on the other days was out, and their FAQ is so perfect I almost choked to death.
