hey, is there any way to house a crested gecko with another animal such as frogs or something. Are there any other animals that can live together in one tank? or a chameleon or any other type of gecko?
The answer varies depending on who you talk to. Cohabiting animals, whether of the same species or different, if a widely and heatedly debated topic. I personally am of the opinion that the cons outweigh the pros. I’m sure that, with enough research and effort, you could come up with a couple or many species that have similar enough care, maybe even ones that would mostly leave each other alone. But you would have to spend far more resources than if you just had two separate enclosures. The single enclosure would have to be at least twice the size, so that both animals had enough room to get away from each other. You would need two light sources, two heat sources, two water sources, feedings would be complicated, all to help minimize resource competition, which would still likely occur. Monitoring weight becomes more difficult, keeping track of who’s eating well and who isn’t, becomes more difficult, who’s pooping consistently. Vet bills could easily get out of hand. Remember, stress can make animals sick, and solitary animals get easily stressed when housed with other animals. Or what happens if one animal ends up with parasites? Or ends up with a respiratory infection? You have to test and treat all the animals in the enclosure. Even animals that don’t visible compete and don’t feed on other animals can fight.
I think, if you want one large enclosure with multiple animals, it would be easier and safer to do a split enclosure of some kind. There’s nothing saying you can’t have two side by side enclosures, or stacked enclosures, that are separated so the animals can’t get to one another, but still decorated and set up to look as if they’re actually one enclosure.
Clings reptiles did a good video on this I suggest checking out!!
Thank you for linking!
tl;dr: it is theoretically possible in a larger enclosure than most zoos put these animals in, but introduces many new levels of difficulty, and is not recommended. Just have two separate enclosures.
