I’m writing a story and want a child character of mine to have a pet lizard. What are some uncommon, but safe choices for my character to have as a pet?

How young of a child? 

Crested geckos and blue-tongued skinks are mildly unusual, but make good pets if properly cared for. Probably a parent would do most of the actual care if the child was an actual child.
