Sensory differences that autistic people may experience which are lesser known:

  • Increased awareness of skin surface, such as feeling oily, sweaty or dry; may have difficulty using sunscreen or bug spray, etc.
  • Difficulty differentiating colors, sounds, or touches from each other.
  • Increased sensitivity to allergies.
  • Odd sense of smell; may smell things intensely or not at all; may perceive smells differently. 
  • Hallucinations or synesthesia.
  • Higher/lower awareness of body placement or organ function, including telling when the stomach is full.
  • Difficulty swallowing certain things.
  • Increased or decreased awareness of needing to use the bathroom.
  • Differing pain, temperature, or hunger/thirst perception.
  • Odd taste in food; may enjoy things others don’t or find common foods repulsive.
  • Difficulty with sense of balance and rhythm.
  • Extreme sensitivity to itch.
  • Fluctuation between hypersensitivity and lack of sensitivity to sensory input.
