Sensory differences that autistic people may experience which are lesser known:
- Increased awareness of skin surface, such as feeling oily, sweaty or dry; may have difficulty using sunscreen or bug spray, etc.
- Difficulty differentiating colors, sounds, or touches from each other.
- Increased sensitivity to allergies.
- Odd sense of smell; may smell things intensely or not at all; may perceive smells differently.
- Hallucinations or synesthesia.
- Higher/lower awareness of body placement or organ function, including telling when the stomach is full.
- Difficulty swallowing certain things.
- Increased or decreased awareness of needing to use the bathroom.
- Differing pain, temperature, or hunger/thirst perception.
- Odd taste in food; may enjoy things others don’t or find common foods repulsive.
- Difficulty with sense of balance and rhythm.
- Extreme sensitivity to itch.
- Fluctuation between hypersensitivity and lack of sensitivity to sensory input.
