No, dramatic TV show, that giant smoke ring is not a “sinister object”. It’s a smoke ring. Weird to see over Chicago, but in and of itself harmless. Probably something is on fire somewhere. 

And that is a volcanic phenomenon of some variety, not a “gateway to Hell”.
