There were suspicions around the WRC that Ratchet wasn’t nearly as crotchety and anti-social as he let on. Late night and Afternoon tank surveillance footage seemed to imply that the cephalopod mer had been sharing his oversized “Go Away” Clamshells with a certain reticent deepsea mer. Some footage even flat out suggested that they might even share one at the same time. Which considering their lack of interaction beforehand, was puzzling.
None of the Staff could prove it though. Firstly, none of them were nearly brave enough to pull on the scuba gear and risk Ratchet’s wrath. Secondly – there was Lazerbeak, Soundwave’s pilot fish, to contend with. She liked spitting stones at those who came too close and alerting Soundwave that there was someone trying to sneak up on him. Pure scientific curiosity was slowly driving them insane. Until someone noticed Rodimus sweet-talking Lazerbeak. Then an Idea was stuck. In the end bribing Rodimus wasn’t all that hard and he already knew how to use an underwater camera.
It took him two weeks to find an opportunity to strike. After promising not to disturb the clamshell’s occupants, Lazerbeak had let him lift the lid and snap a few images. Both Mer were curled up on the soft mossy lining of the clamshell, asleep. The lid was closed slowly and Rodimus returned the camera to a waiting member of staff. Rodimus got his bribe and the WRC had a new header image for their Facebook page and Website. Wisely, no one dared to mention to either mer how adorable they really were.
