listen, I’m not the biggest fan of kids but if a child looks at me then you bet I’m gonna smile back at them. kids deserve to experience the world as a kind and safe place to explore okay.

But the world is not kind or safe.

I smile and if they’re old enough to talk I greet them too and ask if they were helping with the shopping and how school/the holidays/their day has been right after I ask the adult how their day was. I have played SO MANY games of peekaboo around my checkout screen to distract+cheer up grumpy pre-verbal sprats it’s not even funny.

The world is a shithole that these kids didn’t volunteer to come into. As people older than them it’s our job our responsibility to look after them and do what we can to make this shithole a little less shit, like our elders did (or should have done) for us
