With the new trading mechanic, you get candies for a Pokemon that you trade away, and you get bonus candies if that Pokemon was caught far from where the trade happens.
It also works with eggs from gifts. If you hatch an egg from across a continent, you can trade that thing, and both you and your trade partner get extra candies.
