Is it harmful/cruel to clip a cat’s nails? It doesn’t prevent them from scratching but it sure makes it less effective.

It’s best to ask your vet to show you how to trim them safety and correctly, and how often.

If you’re doing it right and have trained your cat to be used to it and not freak out, it’s like trimming fingernails. Cats can usually be trained to put up with it in return for treats.
