oh man drastic lesbian haircuts are defs scary the first time you do it but the nice thing is that you’ll either love it or your won’t, and if you don’t well, hair grows back
for the record, my natural part is in the middle too, but when it’s short the part doesn’t really matter so much. i just picked a side to part it on and had it cut accordingly, and now my natural part only makes itself known when like my hair is wet or i’m doing something weird with it
I also hated styling my hair when it was long, and even now I do very little to style it and rely mostly on the cut and texture of my hair to give it style. But I found that with it cut short and in a style I like, I’m way more adventurous with it and way more willing to style it because I like my hair now in a way I never did when it was long. Then it was just a hassle, but now it’s a) a lot faster to style because I can just throw in some product and go and b) I like how I look with it short so styling it is more rewarding
obviously your milage may vary because like, what you can coax your hair into doing and what styles you can just kind of cut it into are dependent on like, the thickness and texture of your hair, but honestly, if you find a decent stylist with experience with short hair and are specific with what you want (bring reference pictures because they can’t read your mind), you can find a style that you like and suits your hair.
It sounds like you want to do it, and I think you should take the plunge! it’s fun, and if nothing else, grad school is a great time to experiment with these types of personal expression things because there’s no dress code and the environment is pretty relaxed.
I cut my hair short my senior year of college and honestly I wish I’d done it sooner. I’ve played around a lot with it since (growing out the side mullet, cutting it short again, various lengths and styles, etc.) but I’ve never regretted cutting it. It’s been super freeing and for the first time I’ve really liked my hair and how it makes me look. Plus hair cuts are a lot less fraught now that I get then ever 6 to 8 weeks.
PS: You might hate it immediately afterwards, but you have to give it time to really tell, because that might just be the shock of not seeing what your brain is expecting to see in the mirror. So if you go for it and aren’t sure how you feel right away? Give it a couple of days. I find that it takes about 3 days for me to settle into a new style or cut whenever I do something major. So there’s that.
You will most likely have sort of an “agh” response the first time you look in the mirror after a drastic haircut. That doesn’t mean you don’t like it! That just means your brain is going “wait that’s not Right” in response to a change to something extremely familiar. It’s the programming that lets us spot potentially dangerous changes, but it’s not really equipped to recognize that haircuts are fine. Just wait a few days.
