Can you give any recommendations on a good, easy pet bug that’s not a roach, snail/slug, or an arachnid? Preferably something that can’t fly either. I’d do more research before getting anything, of course, but I’m looking for ideas.

Isopods (technically crustaceans, but eh), millipedes, preying mantis (some species are easier than others – you’d want to make sure you get a beginner’s species), uhhh…. Ants? That’s about all I got. There are some beetles that are popular pet insects, like sun beetles, but they can fly.

I wish I had more suggestions, inverts aren’t one of my strong points! I hope this helps a little though. 🙂 

Beetles! I have some blue death feigning beetles (asbolus verrucosus) but there are a lot of different types! Take a look at bugs in cyberspace if you want to see some cool, less common ones.

Most beetles, especially ground beetles like the above and darkling beetles, fly very badly and won’t get in your face. Rhino beetles are also cool.

How about domino cockroaches? You’d never know they’re roaches from looking at them.
