How do you think Soundwave ended up in the pits as a bait mech in the first place? My headcanon is he was hacking into something he shouldn’t have been in order to steal data, got caught, arrested, and sent off to the pits to die. Well, we all know how that turned out. Lil’ spooky noodle ripped his executioner limb from limb.

Something like that, absolutely. 

I like to think he was trying to steal high-quality fuel from somebody important in order to fuel himself and his then-gestating symbiote, but there was probably hacking for blackmail opportunities at the time as well. Multitask thievery.
