the best advice i can give someone who is considering getting pet chickens:

Don’t get the feed store egg layers. Don’t get the breeds that lay “an egg a day.” Don’t get the production reds or barred rocks. Spare yourself the pain of watching your hens lay until they die from reproductive cancer, or egg peritonitis, or any of the numerous other diseases common with high egg production breeds. They are not healthy long term. The less eggs a hen lays, the better.
