Kia ora from across the ditch! I have a question about cat behavior. Our family cat Missy used to drink water from the fish tank despite there being nice fresh not-fish water out for her. She never touched the fish, so we didn’t worry about it but I was wondering why she did this. Unfortunately we had to put her down a few years ago because she stopped eating, but she was 18 so she had a nice long life. Question tax! Pineapple on pizza?

Most cats prefer to drink somewhere that isn’t close to both their toileting spot and their food spot. They don’t really like to drink next to where they eat unless they have to, so I suspect that’s why she insisted on spooking your fish.

I suspect some cats also like the taste. I’ve met more than one cat who, if given the choice between an aquarium and a bowl of clean water right next to it, will pick the aquarium.
