Exercise of the day:
Whenever you hear about a civil liberty or social justice problem, try substituting the given description with “citizen of the United States” (or the appropriate designation or country).
Examples:
“After politely informing the officer that he was armed, a citizen of the United States was shot by the officer at point-blank range.”
“Two citizens of the United States were prevented from registering their marriage by a clerk who objected on religious grounds.”
“A citizen of the United States was held for seven hours by ICE agents.”
“Citizens of the United States knelt during the national anthem in protest of recent events.”
Does it make a difference in how you think about the incident? If so… why?
EDIT: If the mood strikes you, feel free to share.]
