Got a text from my neighbor down the road that a chicken has been seen hanging around their driveway for the past few days. I just spent a good twenty minutes stomping around in a treeline, in the dark, hoping to rustle something up, but found nothing. I plan to check the area in the daytime tomorrow though.

I hope they don’t freeze. Or get eaten. But they’ve survived this long so I hope their luck will hold. I hate knowing that a little hen or rooster is out there all alone.

This just happened to me recently (you can see the original post, if you want, on my blog). I came across a scraggly hen laying in the ditch next to a fairly busy road. No idea where she came from or how she got there, but we’re taking care of her now.

Try putting out a chicken shelter. Put a rubbermaid or box on its side with some straw inside, a bowl of water, and some chicken feed, see if that draws it in.
