Hey! That ask you replied to about the kitten being fed a vegan diet. Im not disagreeing with you in any way…i just feel like it should be addressed that certain herbivores do actually kill and eat smaller animals. One in particular being horses. Its not abnormal for them to be seen eating chicks whole when left unattended near coops…

zoologicallyobsessed:

I stated in the ask that some herbivores do eat meat. It’s just not very common in that they do it regularly. It’s only a newly observed phenomenon so scientists don’t actually know why herbivores do this (it could be

pathological or maybe nutritional deficiencies).

I’ve never heard of deer (beyond bones) and cattle themselves doing it. But it looks like they do as well! Also never heard of horses doing it either so that’s pretty interesting!

Thanks for the correction.

Oh yeah, horses will happily eat baby birds, as will most hoofed animals. Squirrels will raid birds’ nests, and even eat small adult birds if they can get ahold of them, though that’s usually seen in winter when other food is harder to find. Also, every herbivorous fish in the world will nip at/chew a dead fish if they find it, even the ones that only eat algae otherwise.
