THAT use of bowls actually makes a lot of sense!

A guest would not be visiting more than a few hours to days, so an especially exquisite fish could be admired and then returned unharmed.

The fish would usually just be taken out for a meal or a talk, whenever the guests would be around the table the fish was on, so they wouldn’t even be in a bowl for an entire day. These were beautiful, valuable fish, their owners would want to keep them healthy, and the bowls definitely wouldn’t hurt them. In fact, it’d be decent enrichment for the fish, swimming around a clear bowl watching everything outside.
