birblr, this baby showed up on my doorstep today. doesn’t try to escape when I approach. no visible injuries either, but the bird is a little shaky and breathes quickly (was like that before i showed up). there are no avian vets in the hole i live in so any advice would be appreciated
Doesn’t need vet, needs to be taken to a wildlife rescue.
Golden-crowned kinglet. Not a baby!
It might have hit the window and that’s why it’s not flying away. Put it in a dark box lined with a towel and let it rest for a while, maybe 20 minutes, then open the box (outside!). If it doesn’t fly out and is lethargic, you can wrap it loosely in a towel, hold it in your hand, and use a water dropper to try and hydrate it (one drop at a time), then return to the box for a while. If it still doesn’t react as it should, I would then take it to a wildlife rescue.Update: I set up a small towel around it while on the phone with the forester, his advice was pretty much the same. It got more responsive after a while and flew away a few minutes ago. Thanks for everyone’s suggestions!
Glad to hear!
I second the idea that it might have hit the window and stunned itself. If you’ve had birds hit the window before, there are decals (some of which look pretty nice) that you can get and stick on the windows to warn birds that it isn’t an open space.
