Parrots aren’t really suitable pet animals because they aren’t truely domesticated. Can the same be said about all the lizards and herps and snakes and things in the pet trade?

sorry i changed my url again, i used to be grandrelic.

reptiles are not domesticated either but they are not social and not as intelligent as parrots are. parrots have intense social and enrichment needs that reptiles typically don’t have. snakes especially. snakes are totally instinctive animals so as long as they have food, water, the right temps/humidity, ample room, and arguably some enrichment, they are fine in captivity. this is a general statement of course, there’s exceptions.

parrots’ needs are difficult to impossible to meet as pets, but reptiles have “simpler” needs, if that makes sense, regardless of whether they’re domesticated. their brains are drastically different and that affects how well they do in captivity.

Fish are mostly not domesticated, either, but things like neon tetras make great pets if properly cared for. They’re easy to house because they aren’t highly intelligent.
