While I loathe the halfhearted quasi-shipping TFP tried to
do between Breakdown and Airachnid, Breakdown’s bizarre and fleeting
crush on Airachnid did more for the development of his character than
fans give credit. Once again we see him suspend his prejudices and
open his mind to a person he has every right to hate. Moreover,
his interest is neither aggressive or crude– he doesn’t want to dominate
Airachnid; he’s simply “intrigued” by her. Sadly, he lacks the
self-awareness to realize that his instinctual deference to powerful
bots makes him particularly vulnerable to someone as ungovernable and predatory
as Airachnid. He is, as they say, easy prey.

“and the extra arms are a little weird” is one of Breakdown’s best lines in the show. He’s not just putting aside prejudices that may have come from rivalry, but also like, any prejudices based on what a standard Cybertronian apparently should look like. He accepts her for how she is, and he’d do the same general if she were missing appendages. He doesn’t descriminate based on alliances, looks, or abilities. It’s like showing Breakdown a third nipple or two left legs or six other arms growing out your back – and he’d just find it “a little weird”, but it won’t stop him from respecting and accepting all of you, exactly as you are. This is why Breakdown is just such a gem; this sense of respect and open mindedness is high on par with any of the Autobots, if not even a little higher.

Breakdown assumes the best of people.

Until those people laugh at him and make fun of him and humiliate him in front of his superiors. Then he is back to hating them with a murderous passion, but you can’t say he didn’t give them the benefit of the doubt.
