Pros of Betta splendens “sororities”:

*for those who don’t know, a sorority of betta is a tank with more than one female betta fish. Usually 20 gallons+, with 5 or more females.

  • Can keep multiple fish in one tank instead of multiple tanks
  • Can show off to others (the aesthetic!!!)
  • ???
  • That’s it

Cons of Betta splendens “sororities”:

  • Stress is always possible.

“But plants and 100 gallons of space???” Not a valid excuse. Fish get stressed out. 100 gallons is not a substitute for a betta’s wild environment where fish can physically SWIM AWAY and KEEP SWIMMING. “lol no stress stripes and look plants!!” Still, not a valid excuse.

  • Unnecessary death is always possible.

“But it didn’t happen to me” Not a valid excuse. It’s always a completely unnecessary possibility.

  • Widespread diseases and sickness.

“But my fish don’t get sick!!” Not a valid excuse. and, lol yes they do. All fish can get sick, your fish are not genetically superior to other betta. In a tank together they can ALL get sick.

  • When the fish get stressed out and kill/hurt each other, you have to go out and get more tanks for each fish to be separated.

“But I have 5 spare tanks for betta” Wow you have 5 tanks that are each AT LEAST 2.5 gallons with a heater and filter? THEN WHY ARE THEY IN A SORORITY?????

  • The betta get absolutely NOTHING out of this arrangement.

“But they’re not lonely and have interaction with other betta and they look so happy!!!” Betta fish don’t get lonely. Betta fish don’t need friends. Betta fish don’t feel happiness when around other betta.

  • You promote this horrible fish keeping to others.

“But it’s so safe and cool, everyone should do it!!!”  Did you read what I just wrote? It’s not safe. Not cool. Don’t do it.

TLDR

If you keep a “sorority” it is purely for your amusement and has no benefit for the fish. That is a selfish and potentially extremely dangerous situation to DELIBERATELY put an animal into.  There is no good reason to keep a sorority.
