ok so this has been bugging me for a while and i haven’t seen anyone answer it directly. basically, we all know snape is a fucking horrible person. so my question is: is it ok to completely hate snape as a person but like him as a character and how he fit into the story? (sorry i’m not good at explaining stuff properly)

severus-snape-is-a-butt-trumpet:

you’re explaining yourself fine, and of course it’s okay. in fact, i agree with you. i’ve said before, and will continue to assert, that snape is actually a fantastic character, and the main issue i have with him is that people hero worshiping completely erases his moral ambiguity and greyness as a character, and that’s just so booooring. he’s so much cooler if you look at him as he actually is, rather than putting him on this undeserved pedestal

You can look at a supervillain and decide that they’re a great character. Great characters are interesting and fit the story well, they can be the most terrible people imaginable and still be great characters.
