This is why honey is not vegan.

The problem here is that honey, especially if you buy it ethically from an apiarist, isn’t actually detrimental to the well-being of the bee or the hive. In the wild, honey is used as a food stock, but in a domesticated honeybee colony, the bees are fed quite well, and so the honey is a surplus.

The alternatives, like sugar, relies on monocrops in third world countries, with transient labour. Growing up, there was a sugarcane field by my house, and I’m sure the Haitian men who worked backbreaking hours hacking a machete through knife-bladed leaves in 40 degree heat for a couple dollars a day would have traded a testicle to be a Canadian honeybee. Stevia’s going the same way, iirc.

Additionally, apiarists are actually huge proponents and activists for sustainable bee-keeping, and it’s estimated that the domesticated hive may be the last great hope for declining populations, because we can optimize their chances for survival.

It’s their life’s work, sure, but it’s not the death of them to use it responsibly.

Beekeepers-

  • Provide a home for the bees
  • Keep that home warm in the winter
  • Keep the bees well fed, negating the need for honey, which the bees would make anyways
  • Still do not take all the honey, just in case
  • Protect the bees from predators
  • Monitor the hives for any signs of the parasites, diseases, etc. that cause colony collapse disorder

Their bees-

  • Provide a valuable and reliable source of pollination for plants in the area, both wild and crops
  • Help keep the local ecosystem healthy

Honey-

  • Is one of the healthiest things you can eat
  • Is able to keep for a EXTREMELY long time (Millennia even), making it more valuable than many perishable foods without being full of preservatives
  • Can be used to soothe sore throats, nauseau, etc.
  • Has been eaten by humans since at least Ancient Egypt (We’ve found STILL EDIBLE honey in tombs)
  • Is a great tool in cooking, adding sweetness without raising the sugar content much
  • Is a staple food in many people’s diets

Honey is amazing you can put it on or in pretty much everything I goddamn love it and you should too.

Honey is also a natural antimicrobial that has been used medicinally since time out of mind on external wounds like edible neosporin.

Particularly useful in the treatment of dermal abcesses.

Hey Doc, I have a question​. What’s your opinion on giving animals tattoos and ear piercing for reasons other than identification. I personally don’t like the idea but I don’t think it will be that harmful if done correctly by a vet.

There is the potential for cosmetic tattoos and piercings to do harm. Tattoos can get infected, they can hurt, and an animal would need to be sedated to receive one and that is not risk free. There is also a bunch of care that needs to be taken with a new tattoo to take care of it, which is difficult to do in a species that likes to lick itself. Piercings can also get infected, animals like to lick and chew things implanted in their skin, and there is the potential for them to be caught and ripped.

Cosmetic tattoos and piercings offer no benefit to the animal.

Humans can consent to these things, and they could argue that they have a benefit for some humans.

So no, I don’t think it’s ethical or okay in any way to give piercings or cosmetic tattoos to animals. Even if it’s a vet doing it, and I think vets should refuse to allow it.

We put a desexing tattoo on small animals at the time of surgery to prevent them being opened up again to look for gonads that aren’t there if they end up as a stray somewhere. Some livestock have ear tags for identification, but that’s only because intra-muscular implants are not recommended in an animal someone intends to eat.

You also have to consider that the best-case scenario is the modification only causing a small amount of discomfort. Tattoos hurt, especially when they cover a large area of skin. Plus, tattooing or otherwise modifying an animal for aesthetics only furthers the idea that the animal exists purely as an object to be admired, rather than a living being.

Animals do not exist to be decorative. If you want to have an attractive animal (dart frog, fish, etc) as a purely decorative pet, that’s fine as long as you care for it properly, but it is not acceptable to cause an animal pain for no other reason than because you want to change its appearance.

Since people often ask “Alright, well this is fantasy!  Why can’t we have boob shapes in plate armor?!“  I decided to make a post about it.  My frustration has nothing to do with historical inaccuracy and I’m all for imagination and freedom– but I’d like to (very quickly) illustrate this for you:

I purposely over-emphasized the shape of the two spheres in the armor so you can really think about this. 

Look at the shape of the blue cups and the green line, think about the form of that on some beautiful ornate plate armor.  A female warrior is charging into battle.  In the midst of this, she trips!  Or is pushed over, or takes a blow to the chest!  So long as the force is on the front of her torso it really doesn’t matter for the conclusion:

She feels a sharp pain in her chest and hears the cracking of bone!  Oh no, what’s gone wrong?  Well she doesn’t have time to think about that, because she is now dead.

Her sternum just fractured, take another look at that green line, that’s where all of the pressure from any front impact is going to go because of the shape of the two blue cups made for her breasts.  The rest of the armor slides around your body, but because of the two cups for breasts that are often made in fantasy female armors, the pressure point is directly on the sternum.  The breasts are not going to stop the force of you falling onto them, and because of that the metal is going to push in and bash you in the sternum.

What does a fractured sternum do?  Why it goes right into your heart and lungs of course.

GREAT EXAMPLE OF FANTASY TORSO ARMOR THAT IS FEMININE BUT FUNCTIONAL:

It is usually possible to bind the breasts when fighting if they really are far too large to fit into regular looking armor (there’s padding anyway), but most women can actually fit into a similarly sized male counterpart’s armor quite easily.  Even if that’s the case, the armor can be made to have a curve to it without putting all of the pressure in one area, which was actually a style of armor for quite some time as shown here:

And don’t even get me started on the dreaded “Cleavage Window”

The “Cleavage Window” defeats the purpose of having any armor on your torso because it means you’re just going to be leaving open the vital organs the rest of the armor is trying to protect.

If people are going to protect themselves and not have much torso protection, invest in some blocking lessons, because the best defense is to not get hit at all.  There are also advantages to not having plate armor, and plate armor was often really expensive anyway.

I’d also like to add that boob bulges direct blows straight to the sternum as well, rather than making them glance to either side. Good post.

but how else can you sexualize the women if you don’t give them armored boob pods!!!!

Also, breastplates are shaped to redirect the tip of a sword or spear to the side. Boobplates would redirect the weapon right into the middle of the woman’s chest.
